High school roundup for Nov. 7, 2023: Montour knocks off WPIAL champ South Fayette in PIAA girls soccer 1st round

Mia and Marlo Cyanovich scored goals as Montour, the fourth-place finisher in the WPIAL tournament, knocked off WPIAL champion South Fayette, 2-1, in a PIAA Class 3A girls soccer first-round match Tuesday night.
Mia Deramo scored the lone goal for the Lions (14-5-2). Montour (15-3-1) will play WPIAL third-place finisher Mars in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Avonworth 3, General McLane 1 – Emma Luther, Gianna Babusci and Fiona Mahan scored as WPIAL champion Avonworth (20-1-2) bested District 10 runner-up General McLane (14-8) in the Class 2A opening round. The Antelopes will play District 9 champion Clearfield in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Freedom 3, Mercer 1 – Shaye Bailey scored two goals and Mackenzie Mohrbacher added one for Freedom (20-3) to secure a Class A first-round win over Mercer (15-5). The Bulldogs will face Bishop Guilfoyle in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Mars 4, Warren 0 – Addi Girdwood had two goals and two assists and Kate McEnroe and Lily Goodworth combined on the shutout as Mars (18-1), the third-place team from the WPIAL, rolled past District 10 champion Warren (9-10). Ainsley Ray and Rosie Pellegrino also scored and Brynn Ramsey dished out two assists for the Fightin’ Planets, who will take on Montour in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Moon 2, Bradford 0 – Sydney Felton and Gabby Larson scored and Serayah Leech recorded the shutout as WPIAL runner-up Moon (16-2-2) blanked District 9 champ Bradford (18-3) in the Class 3A first round. The Tigers will meet Northern York in the quarterfinals Saturday.
North Allegheny 4, Altoona 2 – Abigail Stager, Kieran Shannon, Ally Ruiz and Isabella Costa scored to lead WPIAL runner-up North Allegheny (21-1) past District 6 champ Altoona (15-6) in the Class 4A first round. The Tigers will meet District 3 champ Central Dauphin in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Shady Side Academy 2, Central 0 – WPIAL runner up Shady Side (16-5-1) shut out District 6 champion Central in the Class 2A opening round. The Bulldogs will play WPIAL third-place finisher South Park in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
South Park 2, Fort LeBoeuf 1 – Alicia Riberich had a goal and an assist and Emily Mihelcic netted a goal to lead the WPIAL third-place finisher South Park (17-6) past District 10 champion Fort LeBoeuf (16-4) in the Class 2A first round. The Eagles advance to play Shady Side Academy in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Springdale 4, Seneca 0 – Briana Ross scored all four goals as WPIAL third-place finisher Springdale (15-4) shut out District 10 champion Seneca (17-1) in the Class A first round. Brooke Taliani had two assists and Kai Williams and Molly Hurley each had an assist for the Dynamos, who will face Riverview in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Boys soccer
Bentworth 3, Seneca 0 – John Scott, Ryan Colbert and Ryan Moessner scored for WPIAL champion Bentworth (19-2) in a Class A first-round win over District 10 champion Seneca (13-8). The Bearcats will play WPIAL third-place finisher Burrell in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Bentworth beat Burrell, 2-1, in overtime in the WPIAL semifinals.
Burrell 9, Redbank Valley 0 – Jayson Ireland scored four goals and Luke Postupack had a goal and three assists to power Burrell to a Class A first-round win over Redbank Valley (16-4). Calio Zanella, Cam Wagner, Vincent Guerrini and Luke Guerrini also scored for the Bucs. Hadyn Herbulock dished out three assists, Will Doutt added a pair of assists, and Ryan Croushore preserved the shutout. Burrell will meet WPIAL champion Bentworth in the state quarterfinals Saturday.
Cathedral Prep 2, Montour 1 (OT) – Cathedral Prep (16-3-1) tied it late in regulation and won it on a Noah Handzel goal in overtime, beating Montour (16-6) in the Class 3A first round. Cathedral Prep will meet South Fayette in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Charleroi 2, Richland 1 (OT) – Bryce Large buried the golden goal to lift WPIAL runner-up Charleroi (20-1) past District 6 champion Richland (13-5-1) in the first round of the Class A playoffs. Arlo McIntyre scored in the first half for the Cougars, who will play District 3 runner-up Tulpehocken in the quarterfinals Saturday.
General McLane 2, South Park 1 (OT) – District 10 runner-up General McLane (15-5-2) scored late in regulation to tie it and won on Gio Masone’s goal in overtime, knocking off WPIAL champ South Park (22-1) in the Class 2A first round. General McLane will meet Central Columbia in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Hampton 6, Bradford 0 – Luke Fiscus recorded a hat trick while Coleman Docherty, Oliver Spinola and Danny Kenst each scored a goal as WPIAL runner-up Hampton (18-3-1) shut out District 9 champion Bradford (11-10) in the Class 3A opening round. The Talbots will play undefeated District 3 champion Hershey in the quarterfinals Saturday.
North Allegheny 1, State College 0 – Arnav Patel scored to lead WPIAL runner-up North Allegheny (17-2-3) past State College (14-2-1) in a Class 4A first-round win. The Tigers will meet Central Bucks South in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Quaker Valley 7, Bedford 0 – Jack Karwoski scored a hat trick, Nick Allan collected two goals and three assists, and Carter Turk and Kiril Grin also scored as WPIAL runner-up Quaker Valley (18-4) shut out District 5 champion Bedford (18-3) in the Class 2A first round. The Quakers will play WPIAL third-place finisher Shady Side Academy in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Quaker Valley beat Shady Side, 4-3, in the WPIAL semifinals.
Shady Side Academy 2, Fairview 0 – Jackson Suski and Amir Awais scored to lead WPIAL third-place finisher Shady Side (16-5-1) to a Class 2A opening-round win over District 10 champion Fairview (14-4-3). The Bulldogs will play WPIAL runner-up Quaker Valley in the quarterfinals Saturday. The Quakers beat the Bulldogs, 4-3, in the WPIAL semifinals.
South Fayette 2, Kennard-Dale 0 – James Casillo and Michael Plasko scored for South Fayette (14-4-3) in a Class 3A first-round win over Kennard-Dale (16-3-1). The Lions will face Cathedral Prep in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Girls volleyball
Beaver 3, Corry 1 – WPIAL champion Beaver (21-0) defeated District 10 runner up Corry (15-3), 25-21, 15-25, 26-24, 25-21, in the Class 2A first round. The Bobcats will face off against WPIAL third-place finisher Quaker Valley in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Beaver bested the Quakers in the WPIAL semifinals, 3-1.
Bishop Canevin 3, Berlin Brothersvalley 0 – WPIAL runner-up Bishop Canevin (20-2) swept Berlin Brothersvalley (23-3), 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 in the Class A first round. The Crusaders will face Maplewood in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Canon-McMillan 3, State College 0 – Natalie Carr had 16 kills, six digs and two aces, Josie Carter had 21 assist and five digs, and Abby Tucker had 10 kills and two blocks as WPIAL runner-up Canon-McMillan (16-4) beat District 6 champion State College (7-9) in the Class 4A first round, 25-22, 25-13, 25-15, The Big Macs will play Landisville Hempfield in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Freeport 3, North East 0 – Alaina Whitlinger had 11 kills and six blocks and Josie Russo added 10 kills and four blocks as WPIAL runner-up Freeport (21-2) bounced back with a sweep of North East (17-3) in the Class 2A first round, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23. Sydney Selker and Lean Schrecongost each had nine kills, Grace Beach dished out 36 assists and Peyton Cene had 14 digs for the Yellowjackets. Freeport will face Philipsburg-Osceola in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Hampton 3, Oakland Catholic 0 – WPIAL champion Hampton (22-0) swept fourth-place finisher Oakland Catholic (15-5) in the Class 3A opening round, 25-22, 25-10, 25-18. The Talbots will play District 6 champ Bald Eagle Area in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Maplewood 3, Frazier 1 – WPIAL third-place finisher Frazier (19-3) lost to District 10 champion Maplewood (17-3) in the Class A first round, 26-28, 25-17, 25-14, 25-10. Maplewood will face WPIAL runner-up Bishop Canevin in the quarterfinals Saturday.
North Allegheny 3, McDowell 0 – WPIAL champion North Allegheny (16-1) swept District 10 champion McDowell (11-8), 25-12, 25-11, 25-20, in the Class 4A first round. The Tigers will face District 3 third-place finisher Dallastown in the quarterfinals Saturday.
North Catholic 3, Warren 1 – WPIAL runner-up North Catholic (19-1) defeated Warren (15-3), 25-23, 21-25, 25-15, 25-16 in a Class 3A first-round win. The Trojans will face Thomas Jefferson in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Philipsburg-Osceola 3, Avonworth 0 – WPIAL fourth-place finisher Avonworth (14-8) was swept by District 6 champion Philipsburg-Osceola (23-0) in the first round in Class 2A, 25-11, 25-10, 25-12. Philipsburg-Osceola will meet Freeport in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Quaker Valley 3, Kane 0 – Quaker Valley (17-3), the third-place finisher from the WPIAL, rolled to a 25-9, 25-14, 25-11 victory over District 9 champ Kane in the Class 2A first round. The Quakers will meet Beaver in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Serra Catholic 3, Cochranton 1 – WPIAL champion Serra Catholic (21-0) took the first two sets 25-14 and 25-13, dropped the third set 25-15 and locked up a Class A first-round victory with a 25-19 win in the fourth set to best District 10 runner-up Cochranton (16-4). The Eagles will play Elk County Catholic in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Thomas Jefferson 3, DuBois Area 1 – WPIAL third-place finisher Thomas Jefferson (18-2) beat District 9 champion DuBois Area (15-3) in the Class 3A first round, 25-17, 31-29, 19-25, 25-20. The Jaguars will play North Catholic in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Field hockey
Boiling Springs 3, Shady Side Academy 0 – WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy (10-6) was shut out by District 3 fourth-place finisher Boiling Springs (19-4) in the opening round of the PIAA Class A playoffs. The Bubblers will meet District 3 champ Oley Valley in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Penn Manor 4, Pine-Richland 1 – Penn Manor (16-5-1), the third-place team out of District 3, knocked off WPIAL champ Pine-Richland (19-1) in the Class 3A first round. Penn Manor will take on Warwick out of District 3 in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Hockey
Avonworth 11, Richland 2 – Conner Ralston and Austin Dzadovsky each had a hat trick and Cooper Powell added two goals to lead Avonworth (5-0) to a Class A win. Jack Lorence and Connor Bethmann scored for Richland (1-5). Jack Dolan, Austin Gatti and Jake Seifarth also scored for the Antelopes.
Baldwin 4, Canon McMillan 3 – Mack Dempsey scored two goals and Tanner Plinta and Logan Cramer added goals to lead Baldwin (1-4) to a Class 3A win. Michael Traynor, Max Hart and Brenden Lomago scored for Canon McMillan (0-5).
Cathedral Prep 3, Mt. Lebanon 1 – Chris Bruschi, Braydan McGarry and Mathius Sprickman scored and Tanner Ball made 30 saves to lead Cathedral Prep (2-4) to a Class 3A win. Brian Opferman scored and Quinn Lynam made 26 saves for Mt. Lebanon (3-3).
Chartiers Valley 9, Westmont Hilltop 2 – Noah Callender scored a hat trick and Brady Nairn added two goals to lead Chartiers Valley (6-0) to a Class A win. Tyler Hled, Brayden Knight, Austin Tornabene and Sean Taylor each scored a goal for the Colts. Logan Glessner and Connor Jones scored for Westmont Hilltop (0-5).
Norwin 9, North Hills 5 – Alex Thomas had a six-point night with two goals and four assists as Norwin (4-1-1) won in Class 2A. Dom Cerilli added two goals and two assists and Aaron Varrati and Parker Toth each had a goal and two assists. Andrew Nazak had a goal and two assists for North Hills (0-5).
Peters Township 4, Central Catholic 2 – Charlie Caputo had two goals and Joey Wateska and Blake Evancic also scored to power Peters Township (3-3) to a Class 3A victory. Josh Moline had a goal and an assist for Central Catholic (3-3).
Quaker Valley 6, North Catholic 2 – Ben McHenry and Jace Vasbinder had two goals apiece and Jacob Keisel had a goal and an assist for Quaker Valley (6-0) in a Class A win. Colin Gnarra and Ryan Berry scored for North Catholic (2-2-1).
