The recruitment process has begun for Highlands lineman Wahkeem Roman.

On Thursday, the 6-foot-5, 286-pounder announced his first official offer from Toledo via his Twitter account.

“It feels great,” Roman said about getting the offer. “I feel like they are just going to keep on coming in now.”

The junior two-way lineman had an impressive 2019 season for the Golden Rams as they went 3-7 but challenged some of the top teams in Class 4A. He said the Toledo reached out recently, and they started talking. Then, Toledo’s co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Mike Hallet, visited Roman at Highlands.

“They said they liked my size, my footwork and my strength,” Roman said.

On offense, Roman paved the way for a running game that produced 989 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He also secured the pocket for freshman quarterback Chandler Thimons, who passed for 1,363 yards and 11 touchdowns. Defensively, he was Highlands’ third-leading tackler, recording 62 tackles and four sacks. He also recovered one fumble.

Roman also took steps to improve his footwork in the offseason by joining the Highlands basketball team. He started most games for the Golden Rams as they won the WPIAL Class 4A championship. He averaged 5.4 points and provided a solid post presence alongside Johnny Crise.

“That definitely helped,” Roman said. “I thank Stosh (Coach Tyler Stoczynski) and Dot (Corey Dotchin) for all the drills they had me doing to get my footwork better.”
