At West Allegheny High School in Hometown Volleyball action the West Allegheny Indians win a hard fought game with section rival the Montour Spartans by a 3-0 match score. They improve their record to 2-2 overall and in section 5 AAA are in 4th place.Game scores were 25-22, 25-21, and 25-10.
The Indians had tremendous serving all match long, seemingly every Indian player produced at the service line. In game one and game three Junior Nicole Ostrander started the game serving and before she was finished West A led 6-0 in both games. In game three Tara Savisky and both Lauren and Sammy Schaupp served well.In all three games Sophomore Alyssa Placha was on the end line serving and took her team to victory each time. In game one West A was down 22-20 when she took over and after 5 straight fantastic serves the Indians won 25-22 to set the tone of the match. Head coach Brian Begor after the game said "The serve is so important, you cause the other team to play defensively therefore allowing your team to set the tone on offense".
Game one saw West A lead early and there were six ties, and spirited play by both teams. Montour after training 6-0, and 11-3 early came back to tie 11-11 with 7 straight points of their own. For the Indians senior's Alexis Hamm, and Jenna Reilly performed well as outside hitters. They continually peppered the Montour defense with hard spikes and eventually wore them down.
In game two the Indians again led early 3-0, but the Spartans tied it at 3-3. From this point west A never trailed in the match again. Junior Audra Killen and Ostrander were both solid defensively at the net. The Indian defense led the way as they forced numerous Montour unforced errors. Also at the net was Senior middle hitter Lizzie Murn. She provided offense. It seemed any time a ball was near her she would either score with a spike, or a well timed touch shot for points.
Into game three the Indians had taken the fight out of Montour running to 6-0, then 12-2 leads. Junior Rachel Buck was a force on the outside, continually sending shots to the heart of the Montour defense. It was an overall strong effort by the Indians. Total team play as they rotated 8 girls in and out of the lineup, with the Schaupp sisters coming in to serve on occasion.
After the game both Alexis Hamm and Tara Savisky were intervied by the MSA staff. Both girls talked about the team and how close they were. They also talked a lot of how young this team is. The roster only has 4 seniors and 5 juniors. Most of the starters were first time varsity starters last year. This year they bring experience and the Indians hope to fight Baldwin, Bethel Park and Mount Lebanon for section supremacy. Coach Begor afterwards also said, "we have fought thru injuries all preseason and even the the first 4 games, A lot of minor things, but we are always missing someone" In fact sophomore Lauryn Long, a starter went down with a torn ACL knee injury and is sidelined for the year.
