Keystone Oaks snaps 3-game skid with nonconference rout over Deer Lakes

Greg Perry was all smiles in the moments after his Keystone Oaks football team finished off a 50-0 nonconference victory over Deer Lakes at Dormont Stadium.

The homecoming win improved the Golden Eagles to 5-3 ahead of next Friday’s crucial Tri-County West Conference matchup at Class 3A No. 1 Aliquippa.

The triumph also was the 100 ^th in Perry’s 14 seasons as a high school head coach.

“It’s a combination of a lot of hard work from a lot of good football players,” Perry said. “I’ve also had a lot of great assistant coaches who have put in a lot of time and effort. When you surround yourself with good people, good things happen.”

Perry recorded 73 wins in nine seasons at Seton LaSalle before taking over at his alma mater in 2014.

The lopsided win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Golden Eagles. It was the sixth time in eight games they surpassed the 40-point mark.

“We played pretty decently the last couple of games, and we also played some pretty good teams in Central Valley, Quaker Valley and Beaver Falls,” Perry said. “Unfortunately, we were just a play or two short. But tonight, we were able to put it all together. I am really proud of the guys.”

Keystone Oaks led 21-0 after the first quarter and extended the advantage to 43-0 at halftime.

The wide margin at the break put the mercy rule running clock into effect at the start of the third quarter.

“That wasn’t our best showing, and the effort was questionable at best,” Deer Lakes coach Tim Burk said. “That falls on me, and it will get corrected. We were a little banged up, but that’s not an excuse. Keystone Oaks is a very good football team, and it showed. They have a lot of weapons.”

Deer Lakes, now 3-4 overall, returns to Big East play next week at Derry as it hopes to stay alive in the hunt for a WPIAL Class 3A playoff berth.

Keystone Oaks dominated from the start. The Golden Eagles finished the first half with 420 total yards and 22 first downs and limited Deer Lakes to 23 yards and one first down.

Michael Daure finished the game with 24 carries for 150 yards. He recorded four first-half rushing touchdowns. Then at halftime, he was named homecoming king.

“It was an amazing feeling to do this with my teammates, especially the seniors with it being our last game here (at Dormont Stadium),” said Daure, who set Keystone Oaks career- and single-season touchdown records in Friday’s victory.

Golden Eagles quarterback Logan Shrubb threw for 174 yards and a touchdown to Ryan Lancaster and added 107 yards rushing and a score.

CJ Morrow caught 10 passes for 125 yards, all in the first half, and he returned an interception 54 yards for the Golden Eagles’ final touchdown late in the third quarter.

The reserves for both teams played the entire fourth quarter.

Deer Lakes quarterback Aris Hasley finished 6 of 17 passing for 43 yards and two interceptions. The Lancers ended the game with 88 total yards.

“We put it all on the line tonight,” Daure said. “We just came with a fire for the whole game. We really wanted it.”
