Knoch hires Brandon Mowry as football coach

Brandon Mowry held plenty of positions with the Knoch football team over the past two decades, and now he can add head coach to the list.

The South Butler School Board voted Wednesday night to hire Mowry, a longtime assistant, as the district’s newest football coach to replace Frank Whalen, who resigned for work-related reasons after the 2018 season.

“It’s very exciting to be able to lead this program I’ve been a part of for quite a long time now,” Mowry said.

The 34-year-old Mowry graduated from Knoch in 2002 after playing for the Knights as an offensive and defensive lineman. He joined the coaching staff while still in college as a volunteer and spent the past 15 years in various assistant positions, the last two as offensive line coach.

Mowry credited former Knoch coaches Mike King — whom he played for and coached under — and Whalen for what they taught him over the years, helping prepare him for his time as coach.

“I got to learn different things from both guys, different styles,” he said. “Everybody does things their own way, and you learn a lot from those guys.”

Knoch finished 5-5 in 2018, including 3-4 in Class 4A Northwest Eight play. The Knights missed out on the WPIAL playoffs because of tiebreakers.
