NA’s Li & Lee and SSA’s Dua Win PIAA Tennis Titles

It was a busy Saturday at the Hershey Racquet Club for WPIAL tennis players as as seven doubles pairs or singles players scored a medal of either gold, silver or bronze at the 2014 PIAA Doubles and Singles Girls Tennis Championships Saturday afternoon.

In the Class AAA Singles, three of the four Semifinalists were from the WPIAL and all three earned medals. Junior Ananya Dua of Shady Side Academy won the state championship when she beat North Allegheny’s Anna Lin the the PIAA finals 6-1, 6-1. Charlotte Madson of Upper St. Clair, who lost to Li in the Semifinals, beat Meredith Lee of Owen J. Roberts in the Consolation match.

In the Class AA Singles, the lone district representative in the Final Four was Michaela Kluska of Greensburg central Catholic, who lost in both the Semifinals and the Consolation matches. Tyra Ott of West Lawn Wilson beat Lin Robertson of Berks Catholic 6-1, 6-1 to win state gold.

Like singles, WPIAL players enjoyed great success in the Class AAA Doubles, where three of the final four duo’s were from District 7. Tina Li and Eugenia Lee of North Allegheny defeated Jean Holcombe and Megan Hixon of Peters Township 6-4, 6-3 in the Semifinals before edging Laurel Shymansky and Amanda Nord of Fox Chapel in the state championship match 46, 7-5, 6-3. Holcombe and Hixon went on to win bronze by beating Kaylee Yan and Amy Zhang of Conestoga 6-4, 6-1 in the Consolation match.

In Class AA Doubles, the lone team from the WPIAL was the Beaver tandem of Anne Taylor and Mattie Taylor, who won in the Semifinals, but fell in the state championship match 6-2, 6-0 to Lauren Petrella and Cait Schultz of Mercyhurst Prep.
