Even though the national signing period started in early February, not everyone put pen to paper right away.

Penn Hills senior lineman Christian Weis signed his letter of intent to attend Waynesburg on Feb. 22.

Weis, who is 6-foot-5 and 330 pounds, was mulling offers from Bethany, W.Va., Marietta and Allegheny.

Weis played guard and tackle at Penn Hills and is expected to play both positions at Waynesburg.

“With all the places I visited, I felt more at home there. I felt more wanted, and the coaches really cared for me not only as a player but as one of their sons,” Weis said.

The lineman joins four other Indians from the senior class who committed to play at the collegiate level.

Wide receiver Julian Majors signed with Michigan State during the early signing period Dec. 20.

Linebacker Darrell Mason (Robert Morris), safety Keivonn Pasch'l (Slippery Rock) and running back Tim Smith (Fairmont State) signed with their respective schools in the early going of the national signing period.

Weis, who would like to major in business management, credits his family for urging him to try out for football in seventh grade at Linton Middle School.

After the first year of playing football, Weis discovered his love for the sport and made sure from that point on to put in the work necessary to succeed.

Even in the early going of playing football, Weis didn't mind playing on the line as he developed affection for the position group.

“Linemen to me have more of a brotherhood than any other part of the team. We all got each other's back. We always try to get each other better whether it be in the weight room, on the field, during a game,” Weis said.

“We always keep each other in check. We make sure we take care of our skill guys if something would happen.”

Penn Hills finished this season 8-4 overall with a 3-3 record in the Class 6A Northern Seven. The Indians made their deepest playoff run since 2008 before losing to Central Catholic, 17-8, in the semifinals of the WPIAL Class 6A playoffs.

“It was honestly the best feeling I've ever felt that my senior class would be able to turn Penn Hills into something that it hasn't been in years,” Weis said.

“Even though we lost in the semifinals, we stuck together as a team. We were more like a family than a team. We cried for each other, we bled for each other and that's the feeling every football team should have.”

Weis, who was a PA Big 56 honorable mention selection, was one of three Indians senior offensive linemen.

Deshawn Butler and Elijah Robinson, who remain undecided on their college choices, were the other two.

Running back Jaquay Sears and tight end/defensive end Damion Brady also remain undecided about their college choices.

Next season, the Indians will be led by juniors: quarterback Hollis Mathis and wide receivers/cornerbacks Dante Cephas and Daequan Hardy. The trio is mulling multiple Division I offers.
