PIAA boys volleyball roundup for May 28, 2019: North Allegheny advances to quarterfinals

The WPIAL champion North Allegheny boys volleyball team opened the PIAA tournament with a convincing victory over District 3’s Hempfield, 3-1, in a Class AAA first-round match Tuesday at Hempfield Area High School.
The Tigers won 25-15, 16-25, 25-18 and 25-23.
Ben Mendes, Drew Hunker and Alex Zubrow all had nine kills. Jeremiah Zemet had 12 blocks, and Sava Topich had 30 assists for the Tigers.
The Tigers will play WPIAL third-place finisher Shaler in the PIAA quarterfinals Saturday at a time and site to be determined.
Bethel Park 3, Cumberland Valley 0 — The WPIAL runner-up Black Hawks blanked District 3 third-place finisher Cumberland Valley in the PIAA Class AAA first round at Hempfield Area, 29-27, 26-24, 25-16. Bethel Park will play District 6 champion State College in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Shaler 3, McDowell 1 — Shaler scored a 25-9, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17 victory over the District 10 champion in the PIAA Class AAA first round at Cochranton.
Class AA
Ambridge 3, Saegertown 2 — WPIAL champion Ambridge overcame a challenge from District 10 runner-up Saegertown in the PIAA Class AA first round but held on for a 22-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 15-6 victory.
The Bridgers will play District 11 runner-up Bethlehem Catholic in the quarterfinals.
Derry 3, West Shamokin 0 — The District 6 champion was no match for Derry, as the Trojans blanked West Shamokin in the first round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs at Armstrong.
The Trojans will play District 10 champion Meadville in the quarterfinals.
Meadville 3, Seton LaSalle 0 — WPIAL runner-up Seton LaSalle wrapped up its season 17-3 after falling to District 10 champion Meadville in the first round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs 25-22, 25-9, 25-18 at Cochranton.
