Welcome to another edition of “PIHL Notebook,” your weekly companion to “The PIHL Power Play” on the MSA Sports Network. First up, “Melting the Ice” provides your weekly thermometer of streaking teams around the league. Meanwhile, this week’s “Scoreboard Watch” includes one team ending a surprisingly long losing streak in Class AAA while a battle of top teams in Division 2 had its own unexpected result. Last but not least, we round things out with a preview of upcoming MSA broadcasts. This may well be our busiest non-playoff week of the year with eight games on the slate to break down. So, let’s light the lamp on this edition of “PIHL Notebook.”
MELTING THE ICE (Records listed indicate current unbeaten streak):
Class AAA: Pittsburgh Central Catholic (3-0-2); North Allegheny (4-0-0); Erie Cathedral Prep (2-0-1)
Class AA: Mars (5-0-0); Armstrong (4-0-0); Baldwin (3-0-1); Bishop Canevin (3-0-0); Moon (2-0-1)
Class A: Montour (9-0-1); South Fayette (3-0-1)
Division 2: Beaver (10-0-0); Meadville (5-0-0)
SCOREBOARD WATCH:
Class AAA
1/11/16 – Bethel Park 6, Pine-Richland 2 … The Rams (2-12-0) carried a 2-1 lead into the third period, but the Black Hawks (5-7-1) erupted with five goals in the final 17 minutes to snap a seven-game skid and maintain the eighth playoff spot. The winner came from Antonio Esposito at the 3:21 mark. He posted a game-high four points (2 G, 2 A) while Tyler Kruszewski (2 G, 1 PP, 1 A) chipped in three more. Ben Meyer helped the Pine-Richland cause with two assists, but Bethel Park was too much offensively with a 35-16 lead in shots.
Class AA
1/12/16 – Chartiers Valley 5, Norwin 4 … The Knights (1-14-0) took a 2-1 lead into the second period, but the Colts (2-14-0) outscored them 4-2 the rest of the way to pick up the win. The deciding goal went to Ray Lindow at 5:08 of the third. Lindow finished with three points (2 G, 1 A) while Spencer Carlson scored twice as well. David Hendler posted a hat trick for Norwin while Anthony Barca made 42 saves despite the loss. Chartiers Valley held a commanding 47-27 edge in shots.
Class A
1/12/16 – Montour 8, Westmont Hilltop 4 … The Spartans (13-1-1) were up 3-1 through two periods, and the two teams combined for eight goals in the third, including five goals in the final four minutes, but the Hilltoppers (4-11-0) came out on the wrong end of the barrage. Ritchy Froehlich buried the eventual winner at the 8:54 mark, part of his game-high four points (2 G, 2 A). Ian McLean and Anthony Hartwick helped him out with two goals and one assist each, including one power play tally. Michael Lamison scored twice for Westmont while Austin Degrange picked up two helpers. Montour took the shots column by a 27-17 count.
Division 2
1/14/16 – Carrick 9, Elizabeth Forward 0 … The shocker here was not that the Cougars (11-3-0) won, but that they did so in such decision fashion, even doubling up the Warriors (10-4-0) in shots 39-19. Jacob Speicher scored the only goal Carrick would need on the power play just 4:21 into the hockey game as part of a five-goal first period, and his team never looked back. Speicher would add another goal with the man advantage and also notched one assist, but Tyler Wolf was the star with six points (4 G, 2 A). Nicholas Manuel contributed four points (1 G, 3 A) while Nathan Norkevicus picked up the shutout.
