Welcome to another edition of “PIHL Notebook,” your weekly companion to “The PIHL Power Play” on the MSA Sports Network. First up, “Melting the Ice” provides your weekly thermometer of streaking teams around the league. Meanwhile, this week’s “Scoreboard Watch” includes overtime action in Class AAA and the Open Class. Last but not least, we round things out with a preview of three upcoming broadcasts, including one in Class A which the “PIHL Power Play” crew will have for you on Thursday. UPCOMING MSA BROADCASTS
12/16/13 – Class AA – Non-Section: Chartiers Valley Colts (4-5-0) vs. North Hills Indians (4-5-0) AT RMU Island Sports Complex at 7:15 PM (Sam Hall and Steve Nagler) … Both teams enter this contest on a 2-3-0 string, with the Colts coming off a loss and the Indians dropping their last two. Cullen McMahon currently leads Chartiers Valley with 14 goals, including six on the power play and one shorthanded. Meanwhile, Brett Berner has paced North Hills in all offensive categories, posting 13 goals, five with the man advantage, and seven assists.
12/19/13 – Class A – Non-Section: Thomas Jefferson Jaguars (6-3-1) vs. Quaker Valley Quakers (9-1-0) AT Airport Ice Arena at 8:30 PM (Josh Rowntree and Adam Hoerner) … Both teams sit atop their respective sections, and both are currently riding a three-game winning streak. Of course, the Quakers hold on first place is a bit more tenuous, leading Mars by just two points, but the Quakers still lead the class with 59 goals and only 14 allowed. James Perkins leads Quaker Valley with 18 goals and 11 helpers while Parker Sherry boasts a personal 7-1-0 mark, 1.57 GAA, 0.929 save percentage and two shutouts. The Jaguars have scored 52 goals themselves, with Nicholas Tamburi posting 13 goals and 22 points.
12/20/13 – Class AAA – Non-Section: Mount Lebanon Blue Devils (3-4-1) vs. Penn-Trafford Warriors (6-3-0) AT Center Ice Arena in Delmont at 8:15 PM (Mike Sackley and Adam Gusky) … The Blue Devils are 2-2-1 in their last five and coming off a loss. Reed Farber leads the team with seven goals and 15 points while Joel Kirshner has posted a 3.10 GAA and 0.902 save percentage despite a personal 2-4-1 record. The Warriors are looking a bit sharper, going 4-1-0 I their last five and coming off a win. Jonah Graffius has pumped in 10 goals, four on the power play, as part of his 19 points. Eric Phelps has seen most of the minutes in net, going 5-1-0 with a 2.67 GAA and 0.899 save percentage.
