Welcome to another edition of “PIHL Notebook,” your weekly companion to “The PIHL Power Play” on the MSA Sports Network. First up, “Melting the Ice” provides your weekly thermometer of streaking teams around the league. Meanwhile, this week’s “Scoreboard Watch” includes a healthy dose of section play highlighted by three network broadcasts. UPCOMING MSA BROADCASTS
2/19/14 – Open Class – Section 2: Erie McDowell Trojans (12-6-0) vs. Blackhawk Cougars (12-7-0) AT Beaver Ice Arena at TBA (Mike Azadian and Lee Mohn) … The Trojans are 2-3-0 in their last five, but coming off a win. They rank fourth in the Nailers Cup bracket with 111 goals scored and 52 allowed. Mitchell Reichert leads a trio of 30-point scorers with 19 goals and 20 assists while Evan Szablewski has posted all decisions in net while posting a 2.89 GAA, 0.891 save percentage and one shutout. The Cougars rank two teams ahead of McDowell with 118 goals scored and two behind with 56 allowed. Kyle Schaefer continues to key the offense with 23 goals and 27 helpers while Cory Steinle boasts similar numbers to his goaltending counterpart (7-3-0, 2.90 GAA, 0.896 SV %, 2 SO). This will be the rubber match between the two, with McDowell taking the first meeting 5-4 on December 16 and Blackhawk winning the rematch 4-2 on January 27.
