Pine-Richland golfer Freyvogel honored in Harrisburg

Last year was special for Pine-Richland golfer Lauren Freyvogel, one that included capturing a PIAA Class AAA individual title and a college commitment to Virginia.

This year is shaping up to be a memorable one as well, as she kicked it off by heading to Harrisburg on Jan. 22 to be recognized by Speaker of the House Mike Turzai, a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, on the House floor for her state championship.

Freyvogel said Speaker Turzai's office reached out to Pine-Richland administrators about honoring her. About a month later, Freyvogel received the grand tour.

“After he reached out, we got everything together, and this past Monday, we arrived at the Capitol building in Harrisburg. It's a very cool building. The outside of it looks amazing. We got the tour and saw all these beautiful rooms. We saw the Supreme Court Room and where the House of Representatives meet,” Freyvogel said.

“It was amazing to see. Then, later Speaker Turzai recognized me on the House floor along with my parents. We took a couple of pictures, and it was really an incredible experience.”

The Speaker of the House also held Freyvogel up as a positive example of what it means to be a student-athlete, touting her 4.1 GPA and her commitment to Virginia.

While it was a whirlwind day, Freyvogel said it's a memory she won't soon forget.

“Everybody was really nice. Even a couple of people, after I was introduced on the House floor, came over to me and told me about their ties to the University of Virginia,” she said.

“Being on the House floor was definitely something that stands out for me. I'm so thankful for Speaker Turzai inviting me there and recognizing me in front of so many people. It was super-motivating for me, and it was just a great way to start off the year.”
