Positive tests shut down Seton LaSalle, St. Joseph girls basketball programs

The Seton LaSalle and St. Joseph girls basketball seasons have been suspended and team members will attend classes remotely through Jan. 19 because of positive coronavirus tests for people associated with the programs, the Diocese of Pittsburgh announced Thursday.

Seton LaSalle had five positive tests, including three people associated with the program. St. Joseph had one.

Students at both schools have been learning remotely this week. Practice, however, was allowed to resume Monday after a three-week sports shutdown ordered by Gov. Tom Wolf.

“All our students have been in remote learning this week to allow some distance between the holidays and in-person classes,” Kimberly Minick, St. Joseph assistant principal, said in a release. “Our athletic teams resumed practices this week, and unfortunately, we have our first covid case. We will continue to take precautions as the health and safety of our students and staff continues to be our greatest priority.”

Seton LaSalle will be closed Friday for deep cleaning. Both schools remain scheduled to re-open for in-person classes Monday.

“On the heels of finishing a successful first semester of five-day, in-person learning, we continue to work to ensure the safety of our students and staff and maintain in-person learning for our school families,” Seton LaSalle principal Lauren Martin said in the release.
