The Quaker Valley boys soccer team hopes to bounce back from its loss in the WPIAL Class AA title game when it begins the PIAA playoffs Tuesday.
The Quakers (18-4) will face District 6 champion Westmont Hilltop at 8 p.m. at Richland High School in Johnstown.
QV saw its 18-game winning streak snapped with a 2-1 loss to Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL final Saturday at Highmark Stadium.
It was the first time the Quakers surrendered more than one goal in a game since a 4-2 loss to WPIAL 3A runner-up West Allegheny in a nonconference game on Sept. 4.
Two days later, QV routed New Brighton 15-0 to begin its winning streak.
The Quakers also finished as WPIAL runner-up last year before making a run to the PIAA championship with four victories.
Westmont captured its second straight District 6 title with a 1-0 win over Juniata last Thursday at St. Francis University.
The Hilltoppers (20-0) got the game winner from Jacob Adams, and Joe Becker made 11 saves.
Adams tallied a hat trick in Westmont’s 3-0 win over Huntington in the District 6 semifinals.
Westmont played in Class A last year. The Hilltoppers were eliminated in the 2017 PIAA first round by District 10 champion Mercer.
The winner between QV and Westmont will face the winner of District 10 Fairview and WPIAL third-place Deer Lakes in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
Panthers to skate against Foxes
The Sewickley Academy (2-3) and Fox Chapel (2-2) ice hockey teams will do battle Monday evening at 7:15 in a Varsity A North Division matchup at Robert Morris University’s Colonials Arena on Neville Island.
The Panthers hope to bounce back from two straight losses that came after two wins in a row.
Fox Chapel has alternated wins and losses so far, and the Foxes are coming off a 7-2 triumph over Blackhawk on Oct. 30.
In its two wins, Fox Chapel scored a combined 15 goals but tallied just two goals in its two losses.
QV hockey goes after win No. 2
The Quaker Valley ice hockey team hopes to earn its second win of the season Monday with a 9 p.m. Varsity AA game against Plum at Pittsburgh Ice Arena in Lower Burrell.
The Quakers (1-4) have struggled offensively with only one goal over their past two games combined in losses to Mars, 8-1, and Hampton, 3-0.
The Mustangs hope to turn around a tough start to the season after losses over their first four games.
Plum is back in AA after one season in AAA. The Mustangs captured the 2017 Penguins Cup AA title.
