Mother nature has been confused. In Week One and Two in early September, there was a chill in the air and the heat acclamation week from August looked like it would go to waste. But on the first Saturday of October, most of the action kicked off with temps in the 80’s. The heat index wasn’t the only thing sizzling on Saturday though as these standouts beat the heat and their opponents with their performance.
Skyy Moore – Shady Side Academy
A sunny sky was not only the forecast for Saturday, it was also the outlook of the Shady Side Academy quarterback in front of a Homecoming crowd at SSA. Skyy Moore rushed for 191 yards and scored five touchdowns on runs of 30, 12, 3, 6 and 18 yards, plus he tossed a 75-yard touchdown pass and had a 87-yard pick six as the Indians rolled to a 54-16 Class 3-A Allegheny Conference thumping of the Valley Vikings.
Cody Ross – Freedom
At the traditional Saturday evening Homeciming game at Freedom High School, Cody Ross showed who was boss as the hosts took a big step toward a second straight Class 2-A Midwestern Athletic Conference playoff berth. Ross rushed for 119 yards and scored what proved to be the game winning 47-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs held on to Knock off the South Side Rams by a score of 21-14.
Asante Watkins – Imani Christian
Back at full strength and coming off an improbably upset of then top-ranked Clairton with four starters missing, Imani Christian did what they do…score…a lot. One of those who missed the previous week was star running back Asante Watkins, who showed no signs of rust by rushing for 139 yards and score four touchdowns as the Saints went marching through the Bishop Canevin Crusaders 42-29 in a Class 1-A Eastern Conference contest at historic Graham Field.
Antonio White – Summit Academy
He may not have put up the big numbers that another wide receiver named Antonio usually does, but at least the Gatorade bucket was safe on the Summit Academy sidelines. Antonio White had only one catch for 8 yards and ran three jet sweeps for 23 total yards, but his 76-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter helped the host Knights keep their Class 1-A Big 7 Conference playoff hopes alive with a 22-15 triumph over the Shenango Wildcats.
