Quaker Valley’s standout lacrosse player, sophomore Lucy Roig, picked up another impressive postseason award.

Along with being chosen All-WPIAL for a second time, the talented 5-foot-5 midfielder was tabbed as an All-American by USA Lacrosse.

“I’m extremely grateful to be named an All-American,” Roig said. “I worked really hard this season and I’m very proud that I was recognized for it.

“This summer, my lacrosse plans are attending camps, tournaments and showcases for colleges. I have also been making sure to practice and work hard because it is my commitment year.”

Next season, Roig and the QV girls team are looking to continue their success of the past two years when they posted 15-5 and 8-8 records and made WPIAL and PIAA playoff appearances.

“My expectations are that we work together as a team and come in ready to play,” Roig said. “We are going to have a great year, and I hope we will be able to put forth our best effort.”

Roig is a three-sport standout at QV. She competes as a defender in soccer in the fall, a backcourt player in basketball in the winter, and lacrosse in the spring.

She already has eclipsed 100 career goals for the QV girls lacrosse team.

“Lucy really understands the game and is able to read what the other team is doing in order to force turnovers and gain possession,” coach Laura Peery said. “Her strength is her ability to cut and get open in tight places. She does a great job of making quick cuts with her eyes up, reading the goalie and (getting) the open spots.”

Roig and teammate Emily Reiner, a junior goalkeeper, were selected to the Section 2-2A all-star team in 2024.

King on the ice

Quaker Valley’s Isabel King can officially be labeled as a “freshman sensation.”

King ranked among the leading scorers on the West team in girls hockey during the PIHL spring season.

The freshman forward played in all 13 games for Team West and accounted for three goals and five assists (eight points), including one power-play goal and one power-play assist. King was assessed only one two-minute penalty this season.

The West team lost to Southwest, 5-3, in the PIHL championship game at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry after skating past the East, 3-2 in overtime, in the semifinal round.

Team West, coached by Joe Cummings, started off with five wins in its first six games before finishing with a 9-4 overall record in 2023-24.

Correction

One quick clarification from last week’s Quaker Valley Sports Hall of Fame article: Jim Roolf was not the coach of the 1968 football team that is being inducted this fall, joining the 1967 team that was inducted seven years ago.

Roolf was a key player and All-WPIAL selection for the Quakers and his name is attached to the talented QV football teams of the late 1960’s. Roolf was a member of QV’s initial HOF class in 1997 and continued his football career at then-national powerhouse Notre Dame.

Roolf was a wide receiver for the Fighting Irish in 1971-72.

“He went on to play at Notre Dame,” QV athletic director Mike Mastroianni said, “which in the late-60’s was a very big deal.”

The 2024 Quaker Valley Sports Hall of Fame weekend will take place in October.

Four former QV athletes, one current coach and two teams will be inducted this year.

The 2024 HOF class consists of the following former athletes: 2013 graduate Spencer Caravaggio Granger (girls tennis); 1992 graduate Dr. Rick Ruperto (football, basketball, track); 1982 graduate Bobby Farrington (basketball, track); and 1985 graduate Willie Jordan (football, basketball).

They will be joined by QV tennis coach Christi Hays, along with the 1968 QV football team and 2002 QV girls track and field team.

Changes coming

The WPIAL recently released new section alignments for the next two-year cycle in all sports.

Changes will be implemented starting this fall. In girls volleyball, Class 2A dropped from 41 teams to 37.

One of the biggest impacts is that the majority of Section 1 shifted with Section 4. The teams that moved include Avonworth, Freedom, Hopewell, New Brighton, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Quaker Valley.

They are joined by Aliquippa and Northgate from Class A.

Power rankings

Eden Christian Academy ended up third with a 20-6 record in the final Trib 10 baseball power rankings for the 2024 season.

The weekly power rankings have zero classification boundaries.

On another Eden Christian note, a tip of the cap goes out to sophomore infielders Brady Hull (first team) and Brett Feldman (second team) for being named Class A all-state by the Pennsylvania State Baseball Coaches Association.

The Warriors were the only club to have two WPIAL players selected all-state in Class A.
