Hometown Softball Recap for Elizabeth Forward Warriors – 04/28/2015
April 28, 2015
A rare battle of two teams in the MSA Sports Hometown Softball Program transpired Monday at William Penn Field.  The West Mifflin Titans were seeking a much-needed win to put some distance between themselves and the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars in the race for a playoff spot in Class AAA.  The Elizabeth-Forward Warriors already had a firm grip on 3rd place in Section 3 and were looking to win to lock up their own spot in the postseason.  In the end it was EF squeeking past visiting WM in a dandy by a score of 5-4.

Hometown Softball Recap for Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers – 04/25/2015
April 25, 2015
It's a shame one of these two teams had to lose. Both pitchers for Chartiers-Houston and Jefferson-Morgan pitched a gem, but it was the Rockets who walked away with the W in a tight Section 1 A softball game. Senior Megan Kraushaar lead off for the Bucaneers, making contact with one of Maddie Ludrosky's pitches, flying out to right field. She would be the only batter to make contact until she was up again in the 4th inning, as Ludrosky struck out the next 8 straight in the lineup.

Scholastic Notebook – 04/25/2015
It opened some eyes in October when Bailey Parshall accepted a scholarship from the Penn State softball team. Parshall is a freshman and when she accepted the scholarship, she had yet to pitch an inning in high school. But after a month of the WPIAL softball season, it has become clear why Penn State went after Parshall. Parshall already has established herself as one of the WPIAL’s top pitchers – as a ninth-grader. In the latest WPIAL statistics published by the Post-Gazette, Parshall leads the WPIAL in strikeouts with 115 and she is tied for the WPIAL lead in wins. She has a 10-1 record. Chartiers-Houston’s Kaitlyn Dittrich also is 10-1.

April 23, 2015
The South Side Rams  were looking to put some breathing space between themselves and the Avonworth Antelopes for 2nd place in Class AA Section 1, and the only way they were going to make that happen was to beat the Lopes outright on its home turf, which they did 6-4 on Thursday.

Hometown Softball Recap for Elizabeth Forward Warriors – 04/19/2015
Keyed by a strong pitching performance and opportunistic offense, the host Elizabeth Forward Lady Warriors scored a 4-0 victory against McKeesport at William Penn Field on Saturday. Sophomore Lauren Mathews, in her first varsity start at pitcher, tossed a complete-game shutout, limiting the Lady Tigers to just six hits. Mathews, who struck out five, showed poise by holding McKeesport scoreless despite allowing a pair of baserunners in both the second and fifth innings. Offensively, Elizabeth Forward took an early lead by capitalizing on the control issues of Tigers’ hurler Sam Arthrell. Three Warriors walked in the opening frame, including Lauren Cain, who drew a free pass with the bases loaded to score Lexi Ribarchak.

Hometown Softball Recap for Baldwin Highlanders – 04/18/2015
April 18, 2015
It was the perfect night for a softball game. Clear, calm and cool -- Arguably the demeanor of the junior pitcher for Baldwin, Jaimie Schleicher. Although Peters Township did score a run in the 7th inning, the late rally wasn't enough as the Highlanders defeated the Indians 2-1 at Baldwin High School. Schleicher started the game perfect through 3 and two-thirds innings with 5 strikeouts. She also helped offensively in the bottom of the 3rd, hitting an RBI-single, allowing freshman Taylor Dadig to score after she singled and stole a base.

Life in Section 1 of WPIAL Class AAAA baseball is full of close calls. The WPIAL season is a little less than a month old and it’s remarkable how many close games there are in Section 1. Heading into Friday’s action, there have been 12 games played in the section. Two-thirds were decided by two runs or less and five had been decided by one run. The close games certainly reflect the balance of the section. But they also reflect the strength of the section. This should tell you the strength of Section 1: It includes four teams – Moon, North Allegheny, Pine-Richland and Seneca Valley – that have made 17 WPIAL championship appearances in either Class AAAA or AAA over the past 11 years. The other members of the section are North Hills and Butler.

Hometown Softball Recap for Baldwin Highlanders – 04/16/2015
April 16, 2015
Rachel Hankin and Rachel Albert hit back-to-back solo home runs in the 6th inning, lifting Bethel Park (5-3, 4-1) to a 2-1 win over Baldwin (5-1, 4-1) on Wednesday night at Baldwin High School. The blasts were the lone blemishes for Highlanders' pitcher and Pitt-Greensburg recruit Jamie Schleicher, who allowed just four hits and struck out eleven batters in the complete game loss. Schleicher would retire the first eight Bethel Park batters, give up a single to Hankin in the 4th inning and then retire eight more batters in a row, before Hankin, the nine-hitter in the Blackhawks' lineup, would launch a ball over the right field wall. Moments later, Bethel Park's leadoff hitter, Albert, would follow up with a shot of her own over the center field fence.

Beaver Falls High School is trying to make sure the school’s 1975 baseball team won’t be forgotten. At a baseball game in two weeks, the ’75 team that won a WPIAL title will be honored before a Beaver Falls game. No one is quite ready to call this year’s Beaver Falls team championship caliber, but the Tigers are doing a pretty good job of grabbing some attention for themselves. It’s still extremely early in the WPIAL baseball season, but Beaver Falls is 3-0. That might not sound like much, but considering the past few years, it is a gigantic step forward for Beaver Falls.
