CTK ’14: WPIAL AAA Parkway Conference Preview
August 14, 2014
The Parkway Conference has dominated the WPIAL title picture since 2009. The last five champions have come from the conference and in three of the last five, two conference teams have played each other in the title game. The Parkway has been represented at Heinz Field every year since 2005. It has to start with the coaches, who have racked up 14 WPIAL titles at their current schools. Even the newcomer to the conference, has made two title game appearances. Add in a pair of coaches who won gold as players and you have a great collection of championship gold and some tough football games. Five playoff spots are guaranteed in the conference, a sixth is possible with the WPIAL wild card, that race for post season play will be exciting as always.

CTK ’14: WPIAL AAAA Southeastern Conference Preview
August 13, 2014
While Upper St. Clair and Woodland hills battled for the top spot in the Quad-A Southeastern Conference in 2013, much the same as they did in 2012, one team that missed out on the WPIAL football playoffs in 2012 was back into the postseason in 2013 while a long time playoff team and co-champion in the conference in 2012 was a rare spectator come playoff time in 2013. Some things stayed the same in the conference made up of teams east of Pittsburgh as well as south of the city…like Upper St. Clair beating out Woodland Hills for the section crown in the regular season, only to see the Wolverines eliminate the Panthers for the second straight season in the district Semifinals.

CTK ’14: WPIAL AAAA Foothills Conference Preview
August 12, 2014
The Gateway Gators have finished first or second in the Foothills Conference for six consecutive seasons. Don’t look for Gateway near the top of the conference this year. That’s because Gateway is no longer in the conference. The Gators dropped from Class AAAA to AAA for this season. The Foothills Conference, though, still has nine teams. Plum was moved from the Southeastern to the Foothills. McKeesport is the defending conference champion. The Tigers lost a number of key players, but still should be in the top of the conference. Many are pointing toward Penn-Trafford as the team to beat. Here is a look at the Foothills: ALTOONA MOUNTAIN LIONS

CTK ’14: WPIAL AAAA Northern Eight Conference Preview
August 11, 2014
The WPIAL realigns football conferences every two years, but the league kept the Class AAAA Northern Eight Conference intact from the past two seasons. But really, the Northern Eight is the northern seven plus the big one from the city. The conference has seven teams from the northern suburbs, plus the team from the Oakland area of the city that wears the helmets with horns. Pittsburgh Central Catholic will once again be a major player in WPIAL Class AAAA after winning the title a year ago. The Vikings also won the conference title a year ago, but they might have a tougher challenge to finish first this season.

CTK ’14: WPIAL 2013 Single-A Football Flashback
August 6, 2014
The big, bad Bears historic five year run came to an end in 2013, leaving the door open for a new team to wear the Class A crown. While many thought it was Sto-Rox and record setting quarterback Lenny Williams turn to claim gold, it was first time champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholc that emerged as the kings of the Single-A gridiron. 2013 WPIAL Single-A Headlines:

CTK ’14: WPIAL 2013 Double-A Football Flashback
Aliquippa continued their 'annual' march to Heinz Field last fall, but in the end, it was South Fayette that was perfect. The Lions beat the Quips for the second time in four years for the WPIAL Class AA crown, then three weeks later, completed a 16-0 season by adding PIAA gold to their treasure chest. 2013 WPIAL Double-A Headlines: *  South Fayette won their first WPIAL football championship in 1964, then had to wait nearly a half century before winning their second district title in 2010. The wait for number three only lasted four years as Joe Rossi's Lions won the Century Conference, the WPIAL and the schools first ever PIAA football championship in a perfect season for the green machine.

CTK ’14: WPIAL 2013 Triple-A Football Flashback
August 5, 2014
In a way, 2013 in Class AAA of the WPIAL was a lot like 2012. Franklin Regional and Mars battled for supremacy in the Greater Allegheny Conference, Thomas Jefferson beat West Mifflin in Week 9 to claim the Big Nine Conference and the Parkway Conference was a meat grinder again, however this time, eventual repeat champion West Allegheny would wear the Parkway crown by themselves instead of sharing it with two others. 2013 WPIAL Triple-A Headlines:

For a fourth straight season, a team from the Northern Eight Conference won the WPIAL Quad-A football championship. However for the first time in four years, it was not the North Allegheny Tigers. Pittsburgh Central Catholic captured district gold for the fourth time and first time since 2007. 2013 WPIAL Quad-A Headlines: *  The most successful title run in Class AAAA history came to an end as the North Allegheny Tigers run of three straight district championships as the Tigers finished third in the Northern eight Conference before falling in the WPIAL Quarterfinals to Upper St. Clair 41-23.

CTK ’14: 7:00pm Kickoffs in WPIAL
August 4, 2014
There are 124 schools in the WPIAL that field a high school football team and 120 of them play a majority of their home games on a Friday night. The kick off times of those Friday games however has almost become a big school, small school split. 19 of the 25 Quad-A schools start their games at the 'traditional' time of 7:30pm while in Triple-A, it is nearly halved with 12 schools kicking off at 7:30pm and 15 teams starting 30 minutes earlier. But in Double-A, 34 of the 37 (Beaver, South Allegheny and South Park the exceptions) and 28 of the 31 in Single-A kick off at the top of the hour at 7:00pm.

CTK ’14: New WPIAL Football Alignment
July 30, 2014
Two years ago, there were major changes in the WPIAL football conference alignment. The biggest change came in Class AAAA and Class AAA where both classifications shrunk from the standard four conferences to three conferences and the wild card came into play. This time around, there were hardly any changes to the top two classifications while the biggest moves were made as expected in Class A.
