Ambridge Three-Peats as WPIAL Boys Volleyball Double-A Champs

For the third consecutive year, the Ambridge Area boys’ volleyball team claimed the Class AA championship, defeating Derry Area in straight sets 29-27, 26-24, 25-20. The threat of storms postponed eleven baseball and softball third round games on Wednesday, making for a very busy Thursday on the postseason diamonds. Five baseball and eight softball contests to determine the participants in Championship Week helped make for some one-sided and thrilling performances on Semifinals Thursday around the WPIAL. For some, it was a turn around of less than 24 hours between the First Round and the Quarterfinals of the WPIAL Softball Playoffs. Rain last week forced a cinch in the belt and a much tighter schedule than usual. But Tuesday's winners wont complain because they are Final Four bound and will actually have a days rest before the Semifinals on Thursday. After being pushed back from the postseason spotlight last week because of Mother Nature, it was a busy day of both First Round and Quarterfinals contests in the WPIAL softball playoffs. Plus a leftover Class AAA baseball Quarterfinals game and a pair of Class A Semifinals contests made for plenty of diamond doings on Monday. Seneca Valley has been the surprise team of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs. The Raiders are the No. 16 seed, but find themselves in the semifinals. One more win and Seneca Valley will make history, but not because of their seeding. Seneca Valley plays Pine-Richland in a semifinal game Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. A win will put Seneca Valley into the championship game for the fourth year in a row. It has been at least 50 years since a team made it to a title game four consecutive years. In fact, it is likely that no team has ever made it to a championship four years in a row. It was a pitcher's duel for five innings at Pullman Park, but in the end Brendan McKay came out on top again as Blackhawk defeated Indiana 4-0 to advance to the Class AAA WPIAL baseball semifinals. The surprises continued on Quarterfinals Saturday in AAAA, AAA and AA as the baseball brackets continue to be busted. The #1 seed in Class AA, Neshannock was ousted as was the #2-seed in Class AAA in Chartiers Valley. We are coming to end of the first week of the district baseball postseason, but the biggest splash thus far came on one of the final games from the First Round. A #16-seed stunned a #1-seed in the Class Quad-A opening round knocking out the first top seed, while AAAA-4, AA-1 and AA-5 were all a perfect 3-0 on Saturday. Mother Nature made it a two day event at Cibik Stadium at Baldwin High School which started Thursday and ended Saturday. Here are ALL of the results from the 2014 WPIAL Boys and Girls Class AAA and Class AA Individual Trck & Field Championships. Here are eight medalists in each event from Saturday’s WPIAL championship meet at Baldwin. The top five finishers in Class AA and the top four in Class AAA automatically qualify for the PIAA meet next Friday and Saturday in Shippensburg University. Others who finish in the top eight must meet qualifying standards to make the PIAA meet. While the forecast was shaky, it turned out to be a wonderful day in Western Pa with only five games on the schedule. It took three days, but the Class AAA First Round came to an end and because of the suspended West Mifflin vs South Fayette contest fro Tuesday night, all of the Triple-A Quarterfinals were bumped back to Saturday. So it was Class A claiming the spotlight as the surprise results continued in Round Two, leaving top-seed California to battle in the Semifinals along with the #10, #11 and #13 seeds in the postseason. NA & Beaver Boys Along With Hempfield & SF Girls Win WPIAL Team Track Titles

Three teams were able to repeat their golden success from a year ago while one school tasted a team track title for the very first time. Hempfield captured a third straight girls Class AAA crown while both the North Allegheny boys in Class AAA and the South Fayette Lions in girls Class AA won for the second consecutive year. Meanwhile, it was a first time championship captured by the Beaver Bobcats in boys Class AA on Monday at Baldwin High School. Rain was the big winner on opening day of the 2014 WPIAL Baseball Playoffs. With 15 games scheduled, only five games made to it the books while two others were suspended and eight were postponed until Tuesday. With every zero that he puts on the scoreboard, Blackhawk senior pitcher Brendan McKay continues to climb the national list for the longest scoreless streak? That naturally brings up two questions: Is McKay anywhere near the national record and does he have a chance to break it before he graduates? The answers are yes and yes. McKay beat Montour, 3-0, earlier this week to stretch his scoreless streak to 58 innings, dating back to last season. That is the fourth-longest streak in U.S. high school history, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations, the governing body of high school sports in the country.
Shady Side & Sewickley Academy’s Sweep WPIAL Boys Team Tennis Titles Again
And the beat goes on in WPIAL Boys Team Tennis. It wasn't easy, but Shady Side Academy captured its fourth straight Class AAA championship with a narrow victory over Mount Lebanon Thursday afternoon at North Allegheny High School. Meanwhile, the dynasty continues in Class AA as Sewickley Academy made it ELEVEN consecutive district championships with a victory over Mars. Hometown Softball Broadcast Recap for Chartiers-Houston on 5/7/14
It took over 48 hours, but Chartiers-Houston (10-6, 8-4) was finally able to take down Fort Cherry by a 15-0 score in a three inning mercy rule win on Wednesday at Allison Park Elementary School Field. The game, which was started on Monday and finished on Wednesday due to lightning and heavy rain, saw the Bucs draw 15 walks and have 4 batters hit by pitches. Kassie Kesneck picked up the win for Chartiers-Houston, going three innings, while surrendering only two hits, striking out three and walking just one batter. Kesneck was also one of four players to record multiple runs batted in at the plate.
