S. Fayette’s Zombeck and Mohawk’s Stelter Repeat as WPIAL AA Diving Champs

At South Park High School in the WPIAL Boys AA Diving Championships, Senior Stephen Zombeck wins his second WPIAL championship in a row. He outdistanced 2nd place finisher Micah Ringer (last years silver medalist) by 51.15 points. Last year he beat Ringer in a close contest by 10.6 points. Zombeck In the process, smashed his score of last year of 353.25. He posted a 423.55 besting last years mark by 70.30 points. Ringer beat his score by 30 points from last year taking the silver 2 straight years. In 2012 as Sophomores Zombeck finished 2nd, Ringer 5th.Scholastic Notebook – 02/21/2014
If the WPIAL basketball quarterfinals are a party for eight, Class AAAA Section 1 has done and unusual thing and made reservations for two. It’s like Section 1 has finally stood up and said “what about us?” Hempfield and Kiski Area are Section 1 teams that have made it to the quarterfinals. It might not seem like much, but seeing two from Section 1 eating at the quarterfinal table doesn’t happen often. Since 2000, this is only the fourth time that two teams from Section 1 have made the quarterfinals and the first time since 2010. In 2007, Albert Gallatin and Norwin made the quarterfinals. Norwin and Franklin Regional made it in 2008. Kiski Area and Latrobe made it in 2010.Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game recap for 2/19/14
At the Beaver County Ice Arena in PIHL Open class competition, the Blackhawk Cougars with a chance to play for a home playoff game lost in a tough battle with McDowell 5-3. Four days and 64 high school basketball postseason games later, the First Round of the 2014 WPIAL Basketball Playoffs has come to an end. While the surprises were kept to a minimum, there were enough eye-brow raisers to make things interesting heading into the Second Round this weekend. Here are recaps from opening round action in the Boys AAAA, Boys AA, Girls AAA and Girls A District 7 playoffs on Wednesday night. Tuesday featured 20 First round games in Boys AAA, Girls AAAA and Girls AA. Of the 20 games played, only three lower-seeds were able to punch their ticket for the Quarterfinals as double-digit seeds Hempfield girls, Montour boys and Blackhawk boys attempt to bust the brackets. Chartiers Valley and Lincoln Park boys are moving up, New Castle boys and Hampton boys are moving down and Pittsburgh Central Catholic boys are moving north...again. 2013 was the Year of the Bulldogs in District 8 high school hoops after Westinghouse swept bot the boys and girls basketball championships. 2014 could be either the Year of the Eagles OR the Year of the Dragons as both Pittsburgh Obama Academy and Allderdice have made it to the boys and girls City League title game. The Blackhawk Cougars sitting in 4th place and an outside shot at the third seed in the Open Class PIHL playoffs simply laid an egg in a 7-0 nothing loss to the Harbor Creek Huskies. The Huskies have the first seed wrapped up for the playoffs which start Sunday February 23rd. It was all Huskies all night as they came on strong right from the first face off. They had played the night before so it came as somewhat of a surprise. Goals by Zach Morris and Nick Rocco in the first period gave them a 2-0 lead after the first 17:00 minute period. they out shot the Cougars 17-3 as well.WPIAL Class AA Individual Wrestling Sectional Results 2014

Woodland Hills High School claimed their second district rifle championship in the last three years by registering a perfect score of 800 Tuesday afternoon in the 2014 WPIAL Team Rifle finals at the Dormont-Mt.Lebanon Sportsmen's Club in Canonsburg. The Wolverines had three of their shooters register perfect scores of 100 with 10 bulls-eyes in Becca DeVito, Seamus McGuigan and Laura Valenti. The team score of 800 (74x) was the highest score in the WPIAL Team Championship history, breaking the mark set by Woodland Hills of 800 (65x) in 2012. Defending champion Hempfield finished in second place with a score of 799 (64x). Bethel Park was third with 797 (60x).
