The first postseason of the WPIAL winter sports season begins on the mat this week here on the MSA Sports Network. We have postseason action from all seven of the WPIAL Team Wrestling Sectionals along with scholastic wrestling from District 6. The reigning team champions for the Allegheny County tournament did not waste any time flexing their muscles at Fox Chapel,High School as North Allegheny cruised to a second straight and fourth overall team title, winning by 60.5 points over number two Mount Lebanon. North Allegheny was led by champions Luke Landefeld, Dom Forys, and Layne Skundrich. For Forys, it was his fourth Allegheny County Championship, joining Sean Clair of Plum as the only other four time champion. Jared Walker and his brother, Zach, brought a lot of people to the ground during football season. The Walkers led undefeated South Fayette in tackles. In the winter, the Walkers are pretty good at taking more people down to the mat. You’ll have to think long and hard to come up with two brothers in the WPIAL who were so good at football – and so good at wrestling. Jared Walker, a South Fayette junior, is the No. 1-ranked WPIAL Class AA wrestler in the 170-pound division. He entered the week with a 7-0 record. Zach Walker, a senior, is No. 1-ranked at 195 pounds. He was 6-1 entering the week. The Walkers are two of the main reasons South Fayette is the MSA Sports’ No. 3-ranked team in Class AA.2014 PIHL All-Star Rosters

The 2014 PIHL All-Star Games will take place on February 9, 2014 at Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Faceoff times are 11 a.m. (Open Class), 1 p.m. (Class A), 3 p.m. (Class AA) and 5 p.m. (Class AAA). Harborcreek leads the Open Class with six representatives, Quaker Valley leads Class A with eight, Latrobe leads Class AA with eight representatives, while Butler, North Allegheny, Penn-Trafford and Bethel Park are all sending six players, the most in Class AAA. In arguably the toughest high school wrestling county in the state of Pennsylvania, if not the entire country, Franklin Regional stood high above its competition, outdistancing its closest competitor by more than 100 points at the 17-team 2014 Westmoreland County Coaches Association Wrestling Tournament held at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville Saturday night. Capturing gold medals in six of the 14 weight classes, the Panthers scored 290.5 team points, easily outdistancing second place Kiski Area (187 points) and third place Latrobe (186.5 points). No matter what time of year it is at Western Beaver High School, it always seems to be Miller Time. Miller is a senior at Western Beaver. True, he may not be at the same athletic level as, say, New Castle’s Malik Hooker or Gateway’s Montae Nicholson, a pair of future Division I college players who shine in others sports. But as far as production goes in three sports, you’d be hard-pressed to find a WPIAL athlete who is better than Miller. Western Beaver was a .500 team in football, but Miller was their leading receiver for the second year in a row.Blackhawk Cougars Hockey Game Recap for 1/9/14
It was Senior night at the Beaver County Ice Arena for the Blackhawk Cougars Hockey team. Seven players were honored before the game. However the Harborcreek Huskies spoiled the festivities with a 6-3 come from behind victory to improve to 12-1 on the season.
