PIAA Baseball Class AA Championship Preview

The scholastic sports season winds down with the PIAA Baseball and Softball Championships at Penn State University coming up on Friday. After a quick start for District 7 in this years state baseball playoffs, 2013 WPIAL champion Beaver is the lone district baseball team to navigate the Path to Penn State. Here is a preview of the PIAA Class AA baseball championship game, which can be heard right here on the MSA Sports Network.CLASS AA BASEBALL:  BEAVER BOBCATS (20-3) VS. LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP LANCERS (21-3) 3:30PM ON WBVP 1230-AM AND MSASPORTS.NET with Bob Barrickman and Bruce Frey The Bobcats make their second trip to the state title game. The only other trip was in 1983 when Beaver was led by soon to be major leaguer John Burkett.

PIAA Softball Semifinals Recap from Tuesday

After Monday turned into a washout for all eight remaining high school softball teams, Tuesday saw the wait was worth it for three of the four WPIAL squads in the state Semifinals. 2013 WPIAL champions Canon-McMillan, Riverside and Neshannock all were victorious Tuesday and will move on to play for state gold on Friday. However Tuesday was the end of the line for Class AAA Ambridge. 2013 PIAA BASEBALL PLAYOFFS
District 7 had one team clinch a trip Happy Valley on Monday and had three more teams with state gold dreams ending in the Final Four 24 hours later. Semifinals Tuesday turned into Black Tuesday for the WPIAL as all three teams, North Allegheny in Class AAAA, Keystone Oaks in Class AAA and California in Class A had their state title bubble pop with losses in Round Three. 2013 PIAA SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS
The 24-hour push back from Monday to Tuesday due to rain did not dampen the spirits of three WPIAL softball teams. 2013 WPIAL champions Canon-McMillan in Class AAAA, Riverside in Class AA and Neshannock in Class A were Round Three winners and are now headed to Happy Valley to play for a state softball crown. Fellow District 7 mate Ambridge lost in their bid to make it to State College. PIAA Baseball Semifinals Recap from Monday
Rain late Sunday and early Monday coupled with a shaky forecast forced the PIAA to postpone 15 of it's 16 baseball and softball Semifinals contests. The lone exception was played at high noon Monday at Pullman Park where a rematch of the WPIAL Class AA championship game from two weeks ago was played. The result in Butler was similar to the result in Washington. North Allegheny Wins 5th PIAA Boys Volleyball Class AAA Championship
June 5, 2013
A pair of dominant WPIAL boys volleyball programs played in the state finals on Saturday with different results. North Allegheny is going to party like its 1999 after beating Pennsbury in four games to capture the schools fifth state boys volleyball championship. The Tigers victory matches their state crowns in 1979, 1987, 1991 and 1999. Meanwhile, Ambridge had to settle for state silver after losing to Northeastern York in four games in the Class AA championship at Penn State University. LaSalle College Boys and Harriton Girls Win 2013 PIAA Lacrosse State Titles
LaSalle College defeated the three-time defending boys lacrosse state champion Conestoga Pioneers for their second state title. The Explorers, who won the inaugural boys state championship in 2009, were led on Saturday by Matt Rambo's four goals, three of which came in a three minute span in the first quarter. Meanwhile in the girls state lacrosse final, Harriton won their first state crown by defeating the two-time champion Radnor Raiders with a thrilling come from behind overtime victory. Senior Caleigh Foust scored five goals for the Rams, including the overtime championship clinching winner. The South Park baseball and Riverside softball teams did something unusual this week – win a WPIAL title with a perfect record.On Monday, both begin a quest to do something even more rare– win a PIAA title with a perfect record.Since the PIAA started softball and baseball championships in the 1970s, no WPIAL baseball team has won a PIAA title with an undefeated record. Elizabeth Forward came the closest, making the PIAA Semifinals in 2011.While no WPIAL baseball team has won a PIAA title with an undefeated record, three WPIAL softball teams have won PIAA titles with perfect records, but it has been 14  years since it happened.

Canon-Mac, Greensburg-Salem, Riverside & Neshannock Win 2013 Softball Titles
In the end, three top-seeds and an unbeaten 3rd-seed were wearing District 7 softball gold. Canon-McMillan repeated as Class AAAA champions. Greensburg-Salem in AAA and Neshannock in A were celebrating their schools very first softball title while undefeated Riverside won a sixth Class AA crown. Canon-McMillan Repeats in WPIAL Quad-A Softball

Junior Giorgiana Zeremenko came thru in a big way as the Canon McMillan Big Macs repeat as WPIAL champions with a 5-2 victory over the North Allegheny Tigers in the Quad-A WPIAL championship game at California University’s Lilley Field. Zeremenko hit a three run homer in the fourth and drove in four runs in the game. Senior Alayna Astuto allowed just four hits and struck out nine to pick up her 21st win of the season without a loss.North Allegheny actually took a 1-0 lead in this game, scoring in the bottom of the first. Laura Cotter led off with a double to left, with one out Christine Scherer singled to left, scoring Cotter. But pitcher Alayna Astuto shut down the inning, getting a pair of fly outs to right to end the inning.

Greensburg-Salem Claims It’s First WPIAL Class AAA Softball Gold
Eleven hits and two big innings, that what it took for Greensburg Salem to pick up it’s first WPIAL softball gold as the Golden Lions defeated the Ambridge Bridgers 8 -0 in the Class AAA championship game at Lilley Field. Jayne Oberdorf allowed just four hits and struck out ten for the win, she has fanned 218 batters this season and picked up her 14th shutout. Kellie Hutchinson went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs. The Golden Lions posted a three spot in the top of the first, Claire Oberdorf led off with a single and was bunted to second. Kellie Hutchinson doubled home Oberdorf, Taylor Mehan followed with a single to plate Hutchinson. With two outs, Maggie Kallock singled up the middle to bring home Mehan.

Wilson & Riverside KO Defending Champ Deer Lakes in WPIAL AA Finals
Riverside senior Kirsten Wilson pitched like a champion the entire 2013 season. Now she has received her just do as she and her Panthers teammate are all winners after beating the 2012 WPIAL Class AA champion Deer Lakes Lancers 5-1 Thursday at Lilley Field at California University of Pennsylvania.Wilson entered the district title game with an 18-0 record and a .043 earned run average with 213 strikeouts and twelve straight shutouts. She picked up where she left off by not allowing a hit until there were two outs in the 6th inning and by then, the Panthers were leading 3-0.

Neshannock Runs Away With WPIAL Class A Softball Championship
The hit parade was out in full force as the Neshannock Lancers pounded out 16 hits in route to their first WPIAL Class A softball championship with a 10-4 victory over the Carmichaels Mighty Mikes at Lilley Field. The Lancers were ousted in the 2012 Class AA semifinals but went on to run thru the PIAA bracket to claim the state championship.Madison Shaffer struck out twelve in picking up her 18th win of the season, the sophomore also was 2 for 4 at the plate with a triple and a double, she drove in three runs. Marissa DeMatteo and Alexandra Fischer both had three hits for Neshannock, now 18-2 on the season.

Four new champions were crowned as the District 7 baseball postseason came to an end. A little WPIAL history was made as South Park became the fifth school to win a baseball championship with an undefeated record. When all was said it done, the Eagles were the only top-seed to win a title while a pair of #2-seeds...North Allegheny in Quad-A and Beaver in Double-A won championships while the party crashers was Class A #5-seed Western Beaver. North Allegheny Knocks Seneca Valley From WPIAL Quad-A Baseball Perch

The North Allegheny Tigers won their seventh WPIAL baseball title with a 4-2 victory over the Seneca Valley Raiders at Consol Energy Park on Wednesday night. Mitchell Machi pitched 6. 1 innings for the win, he was the winner in three consecutive post-season starts. The championship is the first for the Tigers since 2009. Brandon Bergstrom went 2 for 3 at the plate, including a double and started two double plays on defense. Machi credited Bergstrom and all of his fielders for helping him out of jams.The Tigers avenged two 3-2 losses to the Raiders on April 11 and April 25, North Allegheny will take on Hempfield for a second time in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs on Monday. The Tigers shut out the Spartans 3-0 in the WPIAL semifinal round.

Western Beaver Truly Golden In WPIAL Class A Baseball
In an improbable finish to the Class A Baseball championship game, Western Beaver pitcher Nick Miller picked off Santino Platt off second base to end the game and give the Golden Beavers a 3-2 come from behind victory over the OLSH Chargers to claim their second WPIAL championship. Western Beaver scored two runs in the sixth inning to take the lead entering the final frame.The win for Western Beaver give the Golden Beavers their second WPIAL title, they claimed the gold in 2000. Miller picked up the win, going to 7-1 on the season.
