In the fifth anniversary of WPIAL boys lacrosse, won school captured gold for a third time while the other enjoyed their first ever golden crown. Mount Lebanon held off North Allegheny in the Division I finals to keep their streak of winning every other year in tact (2009, 2011 and 2013) while Seton-LaSalle knocked off the Quaker Valley Quakers for the Rebels first ever WPIAL boys lacrosse championship in the Division II title match. The 2013 PIAA Class AAA Boys Team Tennis Finals ended the same way the 2012 championships ended a year earlier, with District 1 champion Conestoga beating WPIAL winner Shady Side Academy as the Pioneers captured their third straight state title. In Class AA after Sewickley Academy lost in the Semifinals, Wyomissing won a second straight PIAA crown by beating Lancaster Country Day Saturday in Hershey. One superstar female athlete is winding down her historic scholastic career while another is not even halfway through and she's breaking records. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough of Hopewell and Breanna Schwartz of Shaler headlined a memorable day at Baldwin High School on the girls side of the 2013 WPIAL AAA and AA Individual Track and Field Championships.(Pictured are Medalists for the Girls Class AA Long Jump)Walker-Kimbrough continued to add to her resume as one of the most decorated golden girls in WPIAL history as she added to volleyball and basketball gold by winning the Long Jump and the Triple Jump.
2013 WPIAL AAA and AA BOYS Individual Track & Field Results
It was a two team show Thursday at the WPIAL Track and Field Individual Championships from Baldwin High School on the boys side. In AA, the Washington Little Prexies returned to their peak form and performed well, taking the majority of the medals. The Little Prexies goal going into the event was to avenge their second place finish in last year’s 4x100 meter relay and they were successful. It seemed as if each time there were AA Boys medals being handed out there was a Wash High member in the top half of the medals. Class AAAA and Class AA teams had their fun in the sun on Tuesday, now it was time for WPIAL Class AAA and Class A teams to enjoy their postseason lid-lifters. Some of the game might have been closer than expected, but in the end, the top four seeds in both classifications are moving on to the Quarterfinals next week. The turn-around from the First Round to the Quarterfinals was a quick one for all but one WPIAL baseball playoff team. 63 teams cut to 32 on Monday, then 32 shrunk to 16 48 hours later. But now the Final Four is set in each classification with the Semifinals set for next week. The curtain rose on the 2013 WPIAL Softball Playoffs on Tuesday....well, at least for half the postseason field. Whle the Class AAA and Class A team will have to wait until Thursday, Class AAAA and Class AA teams had at it to get the postseason off to a flying start. While most of the results were expected, there was one eye-brow raiser in each class. Here are recaps from the 12 softball games played on Tuesday. For the first time in several years, opening day of the WPIAL baseball playoffs was not affected by the weather. On second thought, it was not affected by wet weather as chilly, brisk temperatures made if fell more like late-March rather than mid-May. But make no mistake about it, this was playoff baseball as 64 teams shooting for four championships was cut to 32 squads on one day. Since 2004, Sewickley Academy has sat atop the WPIAL Boys Team Tennis Double A classification as champion. Call it a Golden Decade. The streak continued Thursday as the Panthers captured their 10th straight district team tennis crown with a victory over Mars. It's not as long, but in Class AAA, Shady Side Academy swept past North Allegheny to win a 3rd consecutive tennis title for the Indians. An old-new champion was crowned in Class AAA Thursday at Baldwin High School in the boys team track finals. It is the 9th WPIAL team championship for North Allegheny, but only the Tigers first in five years. NA knocked out two-time defending champion Hempfield en route to the gold. In Class AA, Washington won its second straight district title, the 4th AA team track championship overall for the Little Prexies. Hempfield won their first WPIAL girls team track championship in 1984 and waited 27 years for their second crown. The wait for a third district title was a bit shorter...12 month to be exact as the Spartans won gold for a second consecutive season Thursday at Baldwin High School. Meanwhile, South Fayette captured the schools first ever girls team track gold by edging Beaver, Southmoreland and two-time defending champion Freeport.
