2013 MSA Sports Hometown Softball Program Salute – Bethel Park Black Hawks

This is the first year for Bethel Park as part of the MSA Sports Hometown Softball Program. The Black Hawks finished in fourth place in Class AAAA Section 4 last year with a 4-6 record. They finished 10-10 overall. While Bethel Park hasn't made the playoffs since 2009, the 10 wins last season was a big step in the right direction after the Black Hawks won a combined 11 games overall in 2011 and 2010.Bethel Park athletic director Amy Scheuneman provides some information on the 2013 Bethel Park Black Hawks.

WPIAL Softball – 2012 Softball REVIEW
In 2012, one softball team successfully repeated as WPIAL champions while another won their second title in three years. The other two that sat atop the district softball hill a year ago celebrated their first ever WPIAL golden crowns. The in the PIAA playoffs, a team that didn't even qualify for the WPIAL finals ended up as the lone District 7 team to win a state softball crown. Another great year is in the books for the 2012-2013 high school wrestling season. The WPIAL provided a lot of excitement throughout the year, but it was Canon-McMillan in Class AAA and Burrell in AA that continued to rewrite history. Canon-McMillan not only won its record fourth consecutive WPIAL Class AAA team championship, but the Big Macs also won their second straight PIAA dual meet team championship and third straight PIAA individual tournament team championship. Burrell, meanwhile, continued its dominance of Class AA, with a record seventh straight WPIAL dual meet team championship.

Beaver Falls Joins Lower Merion, Imhotep & Vaux as 2013 PIAA Boys Basketball Champs
Only Beaver Falls survived the State Semifinals as fellow WPIAL members New Castle, Montour and Lincoln Park all came up just short in their quest to play for a boys basketball title in Hershey. Spring-Ford, South Park, Bishop Canevin & Tri-Valley Win 2013 PIAA Girls Hoops Crowns
The WPIAL captured half of the PIAA girls basketball championships as the finals returned to the GIANT Center in Hershey for the first time since 2006. The state championships won by South Park and Bishop Canevin mark the first time since 2005 when Oakland Catholic won in AAAA and Serra Catholic in A. While the Eagles in AAA and Crusaders in AA won first time state crowns, Vincentian Academy had to settle for silver when they fell in the Class A title game. North Allegheny and Latrobe Win 2013 Pennsylvania Cup State Hockey Titles
Last year, the Pennsylvania Cup Championships were played the day after the PIHL Penguins Cup Finals and Quaker Valley was the only west team to win. This year, there were two days between the PIHL and PA Cup championships and Quaker Valley was the only west team that did NOT win. North Allegheny, Latrobe & Quaker Valley Win 2013 PIHL Penguins Cups
Quaker Valley was the only team to successfully defend their turf in 2013 as the Quakers won the PIHL Penguins Cup Class A championship for a second straight year. Quaker Valley beat Mars to remain perfect this season and up their winning streak to 46 in a row. In Class AA, Latrobe returned to the top with a 5-0 shutout victory over Pine-Richland, giving the Wildcats their fourth Penguins Cup title in the last six years. Another shutout was pitched in the Class AAA finals as North Allegheny handed Peters Township their third straight Penguins Cup Championship game loss in a 2-0 victory that gives NA their second crown and first since 2007.

Lower Merion Ends Chester’s Reign As PIAA Quad-A Champs

The weekend ended in Hershey as the PIAA Basketball Championships came to a conclusion with an exciting Quad A Boys title game. The move back to Chocolate Town was a success at the box office as 24,582 attended this year's eight title games, up almost 10 thousand from last year's championships at the Bryce Jordan Center.Here is a recap of the Lower Merion victory:Lower Merion Aces 63 - Chester Clippers 47The Aces ended the two year reign of the Clippers with the victory in the PIAA Boys Quad-A championship at GIANT Center on Saturday night. The Aces have now won seven state titles, it’s the first since 2006. Syracuse recruit B.J. Johnson led all scorers with 22 points and snagged 11 rebounds to lead the Aces.

South Park Wins First PIAA Girls Basketball Gold

The South Park Eagles controlled the game from the start in taking home their first PIAA Class AAA Girls Basketball championship with a 53-38 victory over the Bethlehem Catholic Golden Hawks. Senior Shelby Lindsay closed out her career with a 20 point performance, besting her season average of 18 points per game.The Eagles closed the first quarter with an 8-0 run, helped by threes from Lindsay and Halie Torris. South Park extended the lead to 14 as Lindsay exploded with 9 points in the quarter. South Park did it defensively as well in the opening half, forcing 9 turnovers and held Bethlehem Catholic to 7 of 27 from the field.

Beaver Falls Golden In Hershey With Victory in Class AA Boys Title Game
Very rarely does a player get a second chance to ice a game but that’s what Drew Cook got for Beaver Falls this afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey. Cook missed two free throws in the final minute, but a Zachery Miller offensive rebound, set Cook up for that second chance. He buried both free throws, cinching a 69-63 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders in the PIAA Boys AA Championship Game. The win was the 18th straight for Beaver Falls, who finished at 28-3 overall.
