Tri-Valley Knocks Off Vincentian Academy in PIAA Girls A Title Tilt

It was not to be for the Vincentian Academy Royals as the two time WPIAL champions fell to the Tri-Valley Bulldogs 59-42 at the GIANT Center in Hershey in the PIAA Class A Girls Basketball title game. Jili Weber and Tara Nahodil each scored 19 points as the District 11 champions claimed their first PIAA title.Tri-Valley pulled away in the second half, using a 12-0 run to end the third quarter, Vincentian Academy trailed by two points at 33-31 but did not score again in the frame. Nahodil scored 10 points in the quarter, she matched her season average of 18.5 points per game.

Bishop Canevin Claims PIAA Gold in Hershey in Class AA Girls Championship
The Bishop Canevin Crusaders claimed their first ever PIAA Class AA basketball championship with a furious rally in the fourth quarter to defeat the York Catholic Fighting Irish 45-38 at the Giant Center in Hershey on Friday afternoon.Seniors Carly Forse and Celina DiPietro each scored 18 points to lead Bishop Canevin. The Crusaders trailed 33-28 heading to the fourth quarter but scored 13 straight points in the fourth, holding the Fighting Irish scoreless thru the first six minutes of the final frame.York Catholic fell in the title game for the second straight year and fourth in the last five years. The loss for the Fighting Irish ended a 7 game winning streak this season and a 9 game winning streak at the Giant Center.

North Allegheny Rolls In Third Period To Claim Class AAA Penguins Cup Crown

The North Allegheny Tigers got two third period goals from Joe Griffin to claim the 2013 Class AAA PIHL Penguins Cup  with a 2-0 victory over the Peters Township Indians Wednesday night at Consol Energy Center. Bradford Thornburgh stopped all 20 shots he faced to pick up the shutout win, his first of the playoffs and fourth of the season.It's the second Penguins Cup Championship for the Tigers, North Allegheny claimed the crown in 2007.

Latrobe Golden In PIHL Class AA Title Game

Latrobe got yet another outstanding performance in a stellar goaltending career by senior Shane Brudnock as the Wildcats added a fourth PIHL Penguin Cup Championship to their High School mantle with a 5-0 blanking of the Pine-Richland Rams in the Class AA championship game.  Brudnock stopped all 24 Pine Richland shots that he faced for his 2nd post-season shutout and fifth of the season.

Twice Is Nice For Quaker Valley as They Win PIHL Class A Title Again
The Quaker Valley Quakers continued their winning ways, taking the PIHL Class A Penguins Cup championship for a second straight year with a 5-1 victory over the Mars Planets at Consol Energy Center. Jimmy Perkins scored two goals to lead the Quakers, who have now won 32 straight games and are unbeaten in their last 55. It was the third time that Quaker Valley defeated Mars this season, besting the Planets 5-2 and 4-0 and fifth overall, with 7-0 and 4-2 in last year’s title match.

Mars And Quaker Valley To Meet Again For Class A Penguins Cup Title

PIAA Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championship Results and Recaps

After two days of the AAA PIAA tournament, the WPIAL was on fire. They had 23 wrestlers in the semi-finals and 31 of 42 wrestlers guaranteed to bring home a medal from Hershey.The semi-finals Saturday morning did not go as well compared to the first two days of action, with only 10 of 23 WPIAL wrestlers advancing to the finals. But the WPIAL did set themselves up for an impressive night.Of the 10 wrestlers in the finals, six would be wrestling head to head at 120, 126, and 195. At 120 pounds, sophomore Sam Krivus of Hempfield beat junior Dalton Macri of Canon McMillan 3-1 in a match that did not take place at Norwin last week. It was the first PIAA Championship for Krivus, who finished 3rd last year as a freshman.

2013 PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships Recap – Day One
The PIAA tournament kicked off in Hershey on Thursday, which is the start of the bracket cutting down from 16 wrestlers to the top 8 medalists in each weight class. Thursday marked 4 wrestlers being eliminated at each weight class and the good news is the WPIAL did not get the memo.The WPIAL had a strong showing on Thursday, with 28 of its 42 wrestlers advancing into the quarterfinals while another 10 wrestlers stayed alive in the consolations. That means out of the 42 AAA WPIAL wrestlers, only four guys were eliminated (one wrestler each at 106, 138, 160, and 285).
