Mayo Steps Down at Shenango

The Shenango Wildcats are looking for a new football coach. Ryan Mayo annouced his resignation after 6 years at the helm. The Cats finished 3-6 this season.Mayo was hired in March of 2007, he compiled a 21-34 record at Shenango and did not make the playoffs in his term. The Wildcats were 7-18 at home over the same period and will carry an 8 game home losing streak into 2013.The resignation will not become official until the Shenango school board meets on Monday.

Peters, Mars and Greensburg CC are the Golden Girls in WPIAL Soccer Again
Sometimes the best laid plans of mice and men do work out in the end. No, there are not any mice on the WPIAL Soccer Steering Committee, however the men and women who put together this years girls soccer postseason brackets knew what they were doing. It was #1 vs. #2 in all three championship finals, with all three top-seeds winning the gold. Canon-Mac, Quaker Valley & Riverside Surprising 2012 WPIAL Boys Soccer Champions
When all was said and done, three unlikely champions were draped in gold on top of the district boys soccer mountain. #13 Canon-McMillan in Class AAA, #4 Quaker Valley in Class AA and #10 Riverside in Class A all bucked the odds to win a soccer title, the first in school history for the Big Macs and Panthers and the seventh boys soccer crown for the Quakers. Mt. Lebanon, Mars & Greensburg CC Win 2012 WPIAL Girls Volleyball Championships
Two schools celebrated first time girls volleyball championships while another won a sixth crown out of the #5-seed. Mount Lebanon captured the Class AAA title, their second in four years, out of the fifth-seed. The Blue Devils also won district gold in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2007 and 2009. Meanwhile, special first-time champions were crowned in Class AA as Mars knocked off defending champion Hopewell, and in Class A as Greensburg Central Catholic went from wire to wire at #1. Here are the players that shined the brightest on the first night on the grand stage.Tyler Roth - Mount LebanonThere was a lot of excitement about Butler making the WPIAL football playoffs for the first time since 1998. However their stay in the postseason was short and not so sweet thanks to the aerial attack by Tyler Roth and Mount Lebanon. Mount Lebanon Wins AAA Volleyball Gold over Fox Chapel
In AAA Volleyball there were 8 teams who legitimately thought they could get to the championship game. The number three seeded Fox Chapel Foxes and the fourth seeded Mount Lebanon Blue Devils fought their way through the field to get there. In the end Mount Lebanon would win their schools 6th Girls Volleyball Title 21-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-20.The Blue Devils still have a ways to go to catch up to the leaders in girls volleyball titles. Farrell leads with 20, Norwin is second with 15, and Baldwin third with 9. Mount Lebanon has now won three of the last 6 titles in Girls AAA. Their other three titles were won between 1997-2001.

Two WPIAL Singles Players Settle for Silver In PIAA Playoffs
Two WPIAL tennis players made it through the state tournament all the way to the finals, but both Callie Frey of Mount Lebanon and Spencer Caravaggio of Quaker Valley are returning home from Hershey Saturday with silver.2012 WPIAL Class AAA champion Callie Frey won her first three matches in the tournament without dropping a set. However in the finals, she lost to District 11 champion Cristina Kaiser of Plymouth Whitemarsh 7-5, 6-3.In the Class AA tournament, WPIAL champion Spencer Caravaggio also made it to the finals without losing a set before falling to Audrey Ann Blakely, the District 3 champion from Wyomissing 6-4, 6-4.

Peters Twp Duo Beat OC Duo Again to Win PIAA AAA Double Tennis Title
Sara Komer and Abby Cummings of Peters Township beat Nicole Cyterski and Megan Wasson of Oakland Catholic last month in the WPIAL Girls Doubles Championship. Saturday, the two teams met again for state gold in Hershey with the same result.Komer and Cummings swept past Cyterski and Wasson 6-4, 6-3 to win the 2012 PIAA Class AAA Girls Doubles Crown at the Hershey Racquet Club.The Peters Township duo did not lose a game in four victories in the state doubles playoffs.In the Class AA state playoffs, the WPIAL finalists of Amy Cheng and Jappmann Monga of Sewickley Academy and Chelsea Carter and Sara Kaminsky of South Park each won in the First Round before being eliminated in the PIAA Quarterfinals.

PIAA Cross-Country – WPIAL Runners Come Up Empty on Gold
While there was plenty of gold in WPIAL soccer and volleyball being won, there was no gold to be had in the 2012 PIAA Cross-Country championships Saturday at Hershey Park.One of two medalists from District 7 was Shaler sophomore Brianna Schwartz, the 2012 WPIAL champion who finished second to Marissa Sheva of Pennridge with a time of 18:39 in the Girls Class AAA state championship. Mary Malone of North Hills finished in 4th place in the same race.The Mount Lebanon Blue Devils ended up finishing in fifth place in the Girls Class AAA team standings.Uniontown senior Julie Friend, the 2012 WPIAL Class AA champ, finished in fourth place in the Girls Class AA race with a time of 19:32. She helped the Red Raiders to an eighth place team finish.

Riverside Wins First WPIAL Boys Class A Soccer Crown in Double OT Win Over GCC
The Riverside Panthers needed two halves and almost two overtimes to defeat the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions 2-1 to win their first WPIAL Class A Boys Soccer Championship. Austin Ridgely scored with 6:44 left on a free kick from just outside the penalty area to give the Panthers their first ever championship and the first title ever for a Beaver County school. The Panthers were outshot 18-5 in the contest. Riverside entered the tournament as the #10 seed, the Panthers won 4 one-goal games to claim the title.
