WPIAL Recruiting – Shaler’s Thorpe Picks PSU Hoops

Shaler Area High School has one student who will be a future Penn State football player. Now Shaler has a student who will be a future Penn State basketball player. Geno Thorpe, a junior at Shaler Area, made a verbal commitment to Penn State this morning. He made the commitment when new Penn State coach Patrick Chambers called him at 6 a.m. to wish him a happy birthday.

WPIAL Comes Up Empty Again in 2011 PIAA Girls Volleyball Playoffs
The drought is now five years since a WPIAL girls volleyball team has captured a PIAA championship...and Counting. Pine-Richland, Seneca Valley and West Allegheny made it through Friday's Quarterfinals pool-play, but all three fell in the Final Four Saturday morning.

2011 PIAA Girls Soccer Playoffs
Twelve WPIAL girls soccer teams entered the state playoffs which started Tuesday, and nine are moving on to Round Two this weekend. Only Penn-Trafford, Elizabeth Forward and Avonworth saw their golden state dreams come to an end, while three district teams remain in the hunt for a title in the 2011 PIAA Girls Soccer Playoffs.

2011 PIAA Boys Soccer Playoffs
Six of the eight WPIAL boys soccer teams playing in the state playoffs won their opening round contest and are moving on to the second round, including district champions Upper St. Clair in AAA and Hampton in AA. However one of two district teams to fall on Tuesday along with Peters Township was WPIAL Class A champion Seton-LaSalle.

2011 WPIAL FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS – 11/07
32 have exited the Highway to Heinz while 32 others are rambling on toward the round two exit. There were very few surprises in the First Round as only four double-digit seeds were victorious. #10 Hopewell in Class AAA, #13 Ellwood City in AA and a pair of #11-seeds - South Fayette in AA and Fort Cherry in A were able to keep their long-shot title hopes alive through the opening weekend.

USC Claims Boys WPIAL AAA Soccer Title After Beating Rival PT
The Upper Saint Clair Panthers collected their sixth WPIAL soccer championship Saturday at Baldwin High School, the title leaves them one short of the record, seven WPIAL soccer titles held by, the team they beat in the Championship game, the Peters Township Indians.

Late Goal Allows Seton-LaSalle To Repeat As WPIAL Boys A Champs
Seton-LaSalle was the top-seed and defending champion. They were supposed to be there. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart was the 11th-seed with few outside of the program expecting them to still be playing into November. But it wasn't until the 78th minute that OLSH's glass slipper was shattered.

The rivalry between the Upper St. Clair Panthers and the Peters Township Indians spilled over from football into both the Girls and Boys AAA Soccer Championships.  Baldwin High School was the venue for both title matches, and the ladies were up first.

Hampton Wins Second Straight WPIAL Boys AA Soccer Championship
It was a repeat performance for Hampton, and for the 2nd straight season, the Talbots are the WPIAL Boys Class-AA champions.  Hampton scored 3 first half goals and used a stifling defense to hold the 14th seeded Leopards at bay for their 20th consecutive win.

Quaker Valley Boys Run to PIAA Class AA Boys Cross-Country Team Title
There were no medals won by individual runners from the WPIAL in the 2011 PIAA Cross-Country Championships on Saturday in Hershey, but Quaker Valley was able to bring home team gold. The Quakers won the Boys Class AA Team Title in easy fashion over runner-up North East.

Mars Edges South Park For Second Straight WPIAL Girls AA Soccer Title
In a game fitting of a #1 vs. #2 match-up, the Mars Planets defeated the South Park Eagles 2-1 to win WPIAL gold for the second consecutive year and for the third time in the last 11 years. These two teams came into the championship game without a loss and had boasted 33 shutouts between them so goals were going to be at a premium.

Greensburg Central Catholic is Perfect Champion in Winning WPIAL Girls A Soccer Title
This title tilt marked the third time this season that these two Section 4 (A) rivals had met on the soccer pitch. The Centurions had captured the first two contests both by 1-0 scores.

Golden Weekend in Hershey for WPIAL Doubles and Singles Tennis Girls
Hershey is known world wide as Chocolate Town, USA. However on Saturday to five WPIAL girls tennis players, Hershey became the Golden City. District 7 players swept the doubles titles and also won gold in the Class AAA singles tournament in the 2011 PIAA Girls Doubles and Singles Tennis Championships.

The spotlight always shines brighter in the WPIAL Playoffs. The pressure and the expectations mount in this lose and go home format. Thus when players get it done in Primetime, they earn another chance to shine on an even bigger stage the following week as the postseason field continues to shrink.
