Current New Castle football coach Frank Bongivengo has been charged by state police in connection to misuse of funds from a youth football program. The WPIAL football playoffs start Friday night and never before has the postseason picture looked so perfect.Although the WPIAL started crowning football champions in 1914, the league didn’t have playoff games until 1971. 2010 was the Year of the Tigers in WPIAL field hockey as both North Allegheny in Class AAA and Ellis School in Class AA won district titles. However in 2011, the Tigers were declawed as both defending champions lost in the championship match. The three district boys soccer champions from 2010 all entered Super Soccer Saturday with a chance to repeat here in 2011. Two teams, Hampton in AA and Seton-LaSalle in A were able to succeed in winning more gold on the pitch. It is hard to win a championship in any sport. It is VERY hard to win a title with an undefeated record. In 2011, a pair of girls soccer teams did just that as Class AA Mars (with one tie) and Class A Greensburg Central Catholic (no ties) winning district gold without tasting defeat. The final day of the 2011 regular season and the final Saturday of high school football...well, until the WPIAL championships that is. For coaches and fans, the conditions were rather frightful, but for all of those teen-age kids, the snow and the mud was very delightful.
