Montour Stuns South Fayette to Win WPIAL Boys AAA Championship

They say that the third time is a charm. For Montour, the third battle against South Fayette turned out to be a golden charm. The Spartans stunned the basketball district with a 45-34 victory over the top-seed Lions to win the schools first ever boys basketball crown Friday night at Duquesne University's A.J. After a quiet opening round, the upsets kept coming Saturday in a wild Quarterfinals weekend around the WPIAL. Two more top-seeds, Shaler in Boys AAAA and Vincentian Academy in Girls A were ousted in round two while a couple of other high seeds either survived scares or were eliminated from the chase.

The 2011 WPIAL Class AA Individual Wrestling tournament had a bit of a rhythm to it Saturday at Chartiers Valley High School, with many wrestlers duplicating previous gold medal victories. The story of the night was the 4th WPIAL championship for Shady Side Academy's Geoff Alexander, who became the 20th wrestler in WPIAL history to win gold in all four years of his high school career.
