These are the days of spread offenses and pass-happy teams in WPIAL football. It’s not often you see a team average over 300 yards a game on the ground.But in the next two weeks, two of the top games in the WPIAL will match teams that average more than 300 yards a game rushing. It is definitely unusual. And if you think running the football is not important any more, consider that all four of the teams involved in those games enter Week 8 with perfect records.Aliquippa plays at Beaver Falls in a big WPIAL Class AA Midwestern game tonight, matching two teams that average more than 300 yards a game rushing. Welcome to Week 8. Chick’s Picks, like most other Pittsburghers, was honored to witness the success of the Pirates this season. Since she was just a baby prognosticator during the last Pirates postseason appearance, Chick’s Picks cherished every moment this time around, down to the final pitch. We go eclectic here in the penultimate week of the 2013 WPIAL regular season. A pair of teams battling it out for one of the quickly dwindling spots in AAAA, a pair of teams trying to stave off elimination in AAA, a huge rivalry with a division championship on the line in AA, and a non-conference tilt with heavy, high-seeding implications on the line in A. Something for everyone depending on your pleasure. It is a veritable smorgasbord of high school football. The nerves are a little more active when you hit the 'Stretch Run' of the high school football season as each game takes on more meaning. Some teams have been known to wilt and struggle under said pressure, while others thrive and succeed toward the second season. Now that Shai McKenzie’s football career is over, it’s time to reflect on how good of a running back he was at Washington High School. Going strictly by statistics, it’s not an overstatement to say McKenzie was one of the best of all time in the WPIAL.McKenzie’s senior season is finished because of a torn ACL sustained in last Friday’s game against Charleroi. He was scheduled to have surgery Friday.McKenzie finished his career with 4,856 yards on 493 carries and 77 touchdowns. The yardage is the 15th best in WPIAL history. Had he stayed healthy, there is a good chance McKenzie would have become only the fifth running back in WPIAL history to reach 6,000 career yards.Chicks Picks – Week Four – 2013

Welcome to Week 4. Chick’s Picks has a dear friend at the MSA Sports Network who loves nothing more than to spend his free time attending bizarre fitness classes. For months, Mike Azadian has been strongly encouraging Chick’s Picks to attend a hot yoga session with him. Nothing about this idea sounded even the slightest bit intriguing to Chick’s Picks, but after a stressful week, she decided to give it a try.Chick’s Picks was right—she found little stress relief stretching her body in ways it did not belong. To make matters worse, her trusty crystal ball could not withstand the heat of the 105-degree studio. Week four brings with it the time to separate the wheat from the chaff in the WPIAL football season. You might get to this week with a pretty nice looking record based on some favorable scheduling. Time is running out on teams dodging the upper echelon of their section. Sooner or later , you are going to run into a playoff caliber football team, if it is sooner, it will be this week, if it is later it will be next. But, after Friday we will know a lot more about who will be playing in November and whose seasons will come to a grinding halt before trick-or-treat time has even arrived.Saturdays Scholastic Starz for Week One

Even though the numbers of teams that play their home games primarily on Saturday in the WPIAL shrunk from eight to five this season, it was a busy opening Saturday around the WPIAL with seven games. It is funny isn’t it? How every year near then end of summer the smell of freshly cut grass just starts to smell like football? Doesn’t smell like that in the springtime. I wonder how that works. I am glad it works that way, and I am delighted that it is time to crank up the Big Game Hunting for another WPIAL football season!
