When are two Bucs worth nearly 20 apiece? When you watch Sydney Bordonaro and Natalie Myers play basketball. Bordonaro and Myers are standouts on the Burrell Bucs girls basketball team. They could end up being a one-two scoring punch for the ages. Bordonaro is a 5-foot-7 senior guard while Myers is a 5-11 sophomore forward. After Thursday night’s games, Bordonaro was averaging exactly 20 points a game. Myers was averaging 18.6. They had helped Burrell to a 7-0 record. Over the past 31 seasons, there have only been four duos in the WPIAL who have averaged 20 points or more for the regular season. There is a chance Bordonaro and Myers will become the fifth.Scholastic Notebook – 11/07/2014

If the first round of the WPIAL playoffs proved anything, it was that the Foothills are alive. Since coming back to being a WPIAL conference in 2006, the Foothills was always thought to be the weaker sister to all of the other Class AAAA conferences. Sure, it might have had a strong team like a Gateway, Penn-Trafford or even Central Catholic. But as far as strength from top to bottom, the Foothills didn’t measure up. This year, though, the Foothills flexed some muscle like never before. Four Foothills teams won first-round games – Penn-Trafford, McKeesport, Altoona and Plum. It was the first time since 2006 that the top four teams in the Foothills won first-round games. Rivalry week brought the curtain down on the Friday edition of the 2014 WPIAL football regular season as teams scrambled for playoff spots or playoff positioning. Another great evening weather wise brought forth another batch of sweet performances from players throughout all four classifications. For some, it was a final tune-up to Primetime and the district postseason. For others, it was one final time to shine before the uniforms and pads are turned in sometime next week. Maybe you’ve heard the quote “Down goes Frazier, Down goes Frazier.” It is a line from legendary sports announcer Howard Cosell, describing boxer Joe Frazier after he went down from a George Foreman punch in a famous 1973 bout. In WPIAL football this year, it is “Up goes Frazier, Up goes Frazier.” Things haven’t been this good in Perryopolis (where Frazier is located) since 10 years after that Frazier-Foreman fight. The Frazier Commodores are 5-0 and have a showdown tonight with Beth-Center for first place in the Tri-County South Conference. The winner likely will win the Tri-County South title. Frazier has not started a season 5-0 since 1983, when the school made it all the way to the WPIAL Class A championship game before losing to Western Beaver.Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – Central Valley

At Central Valley High School, the Central Valley Warriors girls volleyball team, in their first appearance on the MSA Sports Network, beat the Ambridge Bridgers 3-0. Scores of the three games were 25-15, 25-19, and 25-21. Central Valley has a veteran team under Dennis Damp with 5 seniors and 3 juniors among the rotation. Coach Damp who has 5 WPIAL Boys titles to his credit, has rounded this years Warriors into a true team. The Parkway Conference has dominated the WPIAL title picture since 2009. The last five champions have come from the conference and in three of the last five, two conference teams have played each other in the title game. The Parkway has been represented at Heinz Field every year since 2005. It has to start with the coaches, who have racked up 14 WPIAL titles at their current schools. Even the newcomer to the conference, has made two title game appearances. Add in a pair of coaches who won gold as players and you have a great collection of championship gold and some tough football games. The golden chase for a pair of WPIAL teams in the boys state volleyball playoffs ended with a silver lining. In both the Class AAA and Class AA state finals, it was a matchup of District 7 vs District 3 teams and it turned out to be a clean sweep for D-3 as both North Allegheny and Ambridge had to settle for state silver. The more things change, the more they stay the same. That is the theme this spring in WPIAL boys volleyball. The calendar may change, but the title winners rarely do after North Allegheny won a record eighth straight Class AAA championship and Ambridge picked up a third consecutive district crown. Ambridge Three-Peats as WPIAL Boys Volleyball Double-A Champs

For the third consecutive year, the Ambridge Area boys’ volleyball team claimed the Class AA championship, defeating Derry Area in straight sets 29-27, 26-24, 25-20. The top-seeded Bridgers used a pair of dramatic comebacks to capture the first two sets, and pulled away at the end of the third set to secure the three-peat at Baldwin High School.Scholastic Notebook – 02/21/2014

If the WPIAL basketball quarterfinals are a party for eight, Class AAAA Section 1 has done and unusual thing and made reservations for two. It’s like Section 1 has finally stood up and said “what about us?” Hempfield and Kiski Area are Section 1 teams that have made it to the quarterfinals. It might not seem like much, but seeing two from Section 1 eating at the quarterfinal table doesn’t happen often. Since 2000, this is only the fourth time that two teams from Section 1 have made the quarterfinals and the first time since 2010. In 2007, Albert Gallatin and Norwin made the quarterfinals. Norwin and Franklin Regional made it in 2008. Kiski Area and Latrobe made it in 2010.
