CTK 2012 – Pittsburgh City League Preview

To make the playoffs in the Pittsburgh City League, teams must finish in the top four spots. With the size of the City League now, only two teams will NOT make the playoffs. With school closures in the past few years, this is the smallest the City League has ever been. Langley and Oliver closed after the 2011-12 school year. That leaves the City League with only six teams. The league joins the WPIAL in some sports this year, but City League officials wanted to remain intact for football. University Prep won the City League title in its first year of existence last year. Here is a look at the City League:

2011-2012 MSA SPORTS ALL MAT WRESTLING TEAM

The WPIAL team championships may have had the same results for the 3rd year in a row, with Burrell winning the AA and Canon McMillan winning the AAA WPIAL title (in addition to the Big Macs winning the PIAA Championship). The individuals certainly did not disappoint, with the WPIAL bringing home 6 individuals state championships plus the City League claiming its first ever gold medal. Four WPIAL & One City League Class AAA Wrestlers Win State Championships
March 11, 2012
Led by Cody Wiercioch, Canon-McMillan won its second straight PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championship Saturday evening at the GIANT Center in Hershey. The Big Macs, with 102 team points, easily outdistanced second place Central Dauphin (67 points). Chambersburg finished in third place with 52 points. Weircioch won his second state title with a 7-4 decision in the 170-pound final over Norristown’s Shane Springer. The Big Macs’ junior completed a perfect 46-0 season by scoring three takedowns on his way to the gold medal. Wiercioch, who won his first state title at the Class AA level two years ago as a freshman at Charleroi, advanced to the finals with an 11-4 semifinal victory Saturday morning over Solanco’s Connor Moran.

2011 WPIAL Year in Review – Top 25 Stories: #10 – #6

2011 has been a tremendous year in high school sports in the WPIAL. It was a year where some familiar champions wore the golden crown again while some new faces surfaced in the championship picture. It was a year when there was plenty of streaking (not like the 70’s) in both the good direction and the not so good direction.

The City League has never looked this way before. It can best be described in one word. Small.This is the smallest the City League has ever been as the league now has only eight teams. Schenley and Peabody closed, but there is a new program in the City League.

CTK 2011 – 2010 Pittsburgh City League Football Flashback

It was rare air in the 2009 District 8 football finals as Pittsburgh City League powers Perry and Brashear were spectators for a game they were often participants in. However all was back to normal in the 2010 City League title game as the Commodores and Bulls battled for gold at Cupples Stadium on the South Side.
