Big Game Hunting for Week Two 2012

Week One was a scorcher, we saw some big time upsets, some tremendous debuts, and some confirmations of things most of us suspected would be true for the 2012 campaign. One thing I think all of us non-head coaches can agree on, is that WPIAL realignment bringing us very meaningful games at the outset of the season is a huge success. Stay hydrated, week two looks just as hot in the big games department, here’s hoping the temps are a little more football-like as we go Big Game Hunting! The storylines are many as the WPIAL football season kicks off tonight. But is there a storyline with more irony than the Springdale at West Shamokin game? There is the new guy taking over for one of the winningest coaches in WPIAL history, and his first game is against a team with a historical losing streak. Dave Leasure will be in his first game as Springdale’s head coach. He takes over for Chuck Wagner, who retired last season after 47 years as a high school head coach in the WPIAL (Oakmont, Riverview, Fox Chapel and Springdale high schools). CTK 2012 – MSA Sports Football Preseason Elite Eleven

Quarterbacks and receivers are big in WPIAL football this year. The MSA Sports Preseason Elite 11 includes four receivers and three quarterbacks. The team, picked by the MSA Sports Staff, is made up of the top 11 players in the WPIAL heading into the 2012 season. Western Pennsylvania isn’t known much for producing Division I college receivers, but this year’s crop of pass-catchers is very good. All four receivers on the Elite 11 have either committed to a Division I college, or have scholarship offers from Division I teams. Two of those four will also also play some at running back this season. The remaining part of the Elite 11 is made up of two offensive linemen, one tight end and one running back.CTK 2012 – WPIAL AAA Parkway Conference Preview

In the 2011-12 off season, there was some talk that the Parkway Conference would be broken up, but when the dust settled, that was not the case. The conference was voted one of the top fifteen conferences in the nation by ESPN and here's why: The last three WPIAL Class AAA champions have come from the Parkway, West Allegheny in 2009, Central Valley in 2010 and Montour last season. Since 1990, thirteen WPIAL Champions have been crowned out of the Parkway. If anything the conference was made stronger by the addition of Chartiers Valley into the fold. Seven of the nine teams in the conference finished with winning records in the 2011 regular season, with three of the four qualifiers winning at least one playoff game.Scholastic Notebook – 06/22/2012

Joe Dunn was known as one of the good guys among WPIAL basketball coaches. But that fraternity is now minus one good guy. Dunn resigned as Trinity High School’s boys coach last week. He wouldn’t rule out returning to coaching someday, but for now, he wants to spend more time with his family. Dunn and his wife have two daughters and a son. Dunn has been coaching for 26 years and had other successful coaching stints at Mount Pleasant and Seton-LaSalle. Dunn became pretty good at taking down programs and turning them into more than respectable. He did it at Mount Pleasant and he did it at Trinity, where he was coach since 2001.MSA Sports Top Ten – WPIAL Baseball – 03/28/2012

Derry Area wrestler Jimmy Gulibon is in Hershey this weekend, trying to make history. The Derry senior is trying to become only the 10th wrestler in Pennsylvania to win four state titles. If Gulibon wins, this one would probably mean the most, simply because of what he overcame this season. Flash back to late December, when Gulibon was wrestling in the finals of the Powerade Tournament. He won, but sustained a left knee injury. Gulibon, and some others, thought the injury might be serious. They thought it might be an ACL tear. “He was very scared because he never even really had an injury before,” said Derry coach Mike Weinell. “We didn’t know at the time how serious it was. Jimmy just knew he couldn’t do what he does. He couldn’t push off his foot or his leg.”2012 PIHL Open Class High School Hockey Playoffs

While PIHL Class AAA, Class AA and Class A teams are in the final two weeks of the long regular season, the Open Class teams have already dropped the puck on their postseason tournaments. The Nailers Cup is down to the Final Three while the championship game is set in the battle for the Chiefs Cup after the top two seeds were eliminated in the Semifinals.
