2014 MSA Sports Boys Basketball All-Netters

Two teams that won WPIAL championships this season each have two players on the MSA Sports All-Netters boys basketball all-star team. New Castle won the WPIAL Class AAAA championship and Lincoln Park the Class A title. They each have a duo on the team, which is picked by the MSA Sports Staff. The All-Netters squad (first- and second-teams) are made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position. The teams also includes three juniors and one sophomore. Seton-LaSalle boys basketball coach Mark Walsh is known as “Knobby.” He has two brothers, Kevin and Danny, who also are known as “Knobby.” The boys’ father, Ed, also is known as “Knobby.” It is a crazy name game. But at Seton-LaSalle, just call Mark Walsh one thing. “Winner.” Walsh has made Seton-LaSalle basketball relevant again. Well, more than relevant. He has guided the Rebels to one of the best seasons in school history. Seton-LaSalle won a WPIAL title for only the second time since joining the league in the mid 1970s. Another postseason tournament starts this weekend for the New Castle boys basketball team and the Red Hurricanes. While New Castle has achieved a number of historical feats the past few seasons, the start of the PIAA playoffs means New Castle will take another shot at joining a most special group. But to become a member, New Castle will have to look just perfect. For the third year in a row, New Castle will take a perfect record into the PIAA tournament after winning a WPIAL title with an undefeated record.WPIAL Boys Basketball Championship Preview

Kudos to the WPIAL basketball steering committee for their excellent work in setting up the boys basketball playoffs. In the end, which is their starting goal, they try to get the two best teams playing for gold. This weekend it will be #1 vs #2 in three of the four finals, with the lone exception being the #1 vs #3 matchup in Class A. Here is a look at this weekend four boys championship hoop games. CLASS AAAA: The game: New Castle (25-0) vs. Hampton (22-3) Saturday at 7 p.m.
NH’s Bostick & Char Valley’s Lohman Win WPIAL AAA Diving Gold

North Hills senior Noah Bostick captured a bronze medal as a sophomore and at last year’s competition he took home the silver with a score of 496.65. Consider the progression complete for Bostick as he captured the WPIAL Class AAA gold medal by posting a score of 506.85 at North Allegheny High School. Bostick was solid throughout all three rounds of the meet. After going back and forth with Penn-Trafford sophomore Joey Ference heading into the final round of three dives, Bostick took control with his first final dive and finished 52.10 points ahead of the second place finisher, Andrew Doerfler of North Allegheny.Scholastic Notebook – 02/01/2014

The son is shining all over area basketball this season. It is quite common to see a coach’s son do well in WPIAL basketball. But it just seems there are more than usual father-son combos doing well this year. Four sons whose father is the head coach are averaging between 17 and 22 points a game for teams that all have at least clinched a WPIAL playoff berth, or are in good shape to make it to the postseason. * Julian Batts, a junior guard at Jeannette, averages 22 a game for the Jayhawks. His father is Adrian Batts. Jeannette is tied for second place in Class AA Section 3. * Matty McConnell averages 19 a game for Chartiers Valley, which has clinched at least a tie for the Class AA Section 5 title. Jared Walker and his brother, Zach, brought a lot of people to the ground during football season. The Walkers led undefeated South Fayette in tackles. In the winter, the Walkers are pretty good at taking more people down to the mat. You’ll have to think long and hard to come up with two brothers in the WPIAL who were so good at football – and so good at wrestling. Jared Walker, a South Fayette junior, is the No. 1-ranked WPIAL Class AA wrestler in the 170-pound division. He entered the week with a 7-0 record. Zach Walker, a senior, is No. 1-ranked at 195 pounds. He was 6-1 entering the week. No matter what time of year it is at Western Beaver High School, it always seems to be Miller Time. Miller is a senior at Western Beaver. True, he may not be at the same athletic level as, say, New Castle’s Malik Hooker or Gateway’s Montae Nicholson, a pair of future Division I college players who shine in others sports. But as far as production goes in three sports, you’d be hard-pressed to find a WPIAL athlete who is better than Miller. Western Beaver was a .500 team in football, but Miller was their leading receiver for the second year in a row.Scholastic Notebook – 11/29/2013

It was a pretty big deal this fall when Sto-Rox’s Lenny Williams became the WPIAL all-time leading passer. But it’s looking like Williams’ record might not last more than a year. South Fayette’s Brett Brumbaugh appears to have a very good shot at Williams’ record next year. Let’s look at the numbers and the possibilities: Williams, a senior, finished his career with 8,508 yards. Besides that being the best in WPIAL history, it also was fifth-best in state history. Sto-Rox lost lost last week in the WPIAL Class A finals and the loss means Williams can’t add more distance between himself and Brumbaugh.WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for Week Two

Football is a copycat sport. If somebody has success at any level, it seems to filter up and done as fads and tendencies come and go. For years many teams have wanted to emulate the Baltimore Ravens defense. After the Ravens D’s performance in the NFL season opener on Sunday, it seems many WPIAL football teams can now say mission accomplished after a night of high scoring with points a plenty.
