WPIAL Week Six Saturday’s Scholastic Starz
October 7, 2012
The sun was shining bright Saturday afternoon, even though the mercury did not reach the 70's as has been the case the last week or so. For that matter, most temps didn't even make it into the 60's, but nonetheless, each of the five WPIAL football games played had a player heat up the gridiron with a winning effort on the first Saturday in October.Luke Brumbaugh - Seton-LaSalle

We salute those five along with the other top performances from the Fourth Friday of the high school football season in District 7.Forrest Barnes - Seneca Valley

When Demetrious Cox graduated from Jeannette in June and headed to Michigan State, the Jayhawks’ football team lost a big-time player. But Jeannette hasn’t lost the ability to make big plays. Take a look at the first two weeks of the season and what Jeannette has done in the big-play department is on the surreal side. Granted, the competition has been weak (Charleroi and Southmoreland), but Jeannette’s big-play ability has been magnificent. The Jayhawks are acting like a bunch of “big” shots. In two games, Jeannette (2-0) has scored 14 touchdowns (three passing, 10 running and one on a punt return), and the average length of those touchdowns is 36.7 yards. The Jayhawks have six scoring plays of 40 yards or more.

CTK 2012 – WPIAL AA Allegheny Conference
August 23, 2012
Freeport and Shady Side Academy tied for the conference championship two of the past three seasons. This year could be more of the same. Many are pegging Freeport and Shady Side Academy as the teams to beat this year. Both teams are experienced and have some talented players. But Burrell and Ford City can’t be overlooked. The Allegheny Conference changed a little this season. Apollo-Ridge and West Shamokin both dropped out of the conference and moved down to the Class A Eastern Conference. That should help West Shamokin, which hasn’t won a game since the 2007 season.

June 15, 2012
Since the pitching rubber for girls softball was moved back a few feet last season, pitchers don’t dominate to the same extent in this sport. This year’s all-star team is made up of eight pitchers. Two of the eight pitchers won WPIAL championships. Here is a look at this 2012 Diamond Dolls. MSA SPORTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR: KAITLYN KUTCHMAN Montour  P  Sr.

After Blackhawk’s Brendan McKay pitched a shutout in the WPIAL Class AAA championship Thursday, Blackhawk coach Bob Amalia said there is no stage too big for McKay. But as sophomores go, McKay has the entire stage to himself. The way McKay has pitched this season brings about a question. Has there ever been a sophomore pitcher in the WPIAL who has enjoyed this much success in one of the largest classifications? McKay, a sophomore left-hander, has been tremendous for a pitcher in any year, let alone one in his sophomore season. His statistics go beyond impressive.

Deer Lakes Comes Back Late to Claim First WPIAL AA Softball Championship
May 31, 2012
In unlikely fashion, the Deer Lakers Lancers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and a run in the eighth to claim their first ever Class AA Softball championship with a 3-2 eight inning win over the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions.Becca Babincak bunted to lead off the inning and stole second, after one out, Candace Scanga hit a grounder to first that Alie Perz could not handle, putting runners at first and third.
