WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Seven 2015

The “Stretch Run” for 2015 is on us, the final third of the regular season will start this weekend with several big games around the WPIAL. Players, whether you are playing for a number one seed, a conference title, a home playoff game, a shot at the playoffs, a winning season, or to get your only win of the season, play hard, keep your head up when you tackle and make the most of this time in your life. If you are going to watch, cheer hard, bellyache less about the refs and the coaches, support your kids and your team without feeling like you need to control or have some input as to how the other team should or should not conduct themselves. While the mercury continues to dip as October and autumn settle in, the lineup of big games was red hot up and down the FOUR classifications around the WPIAL. Battles for first place here, showdowns between unbeaten teams there, big games, big games everywhere. Some of them lived up to their billing and thrilled the huge crowds on hands, some were closer early before the final results was no so tight, and others were just an old fashioned butt whipping. Whatever the case, big game or not, here are the players that stood out in various playoff like atmosphere's in only Week Six. A little precipitation in the area before the real wet stuff driven by Hurricane Joaquin Andujar (look it up kids)...no problem. Temperatures dipping into the low 50's with winds that made it feel more like the 40's...again, no problem. Defenses geared to...wait, I'll just stop there. In this wild and crazy season of video game like play on the field resulting in huge points here, there and everywhere, top performances around the WPIAL on a Friday night are no longer hard to find. While Mother Nature held off on the fancy sky light shows and the rain that plagued many games on opening night, the second Friday of the season was an historic one in two ways. First, a tip of the cap 700 times to the Jeannette Jayhawks for becoming only the second district school and sixth school in Pennsylvania to mass that many wins. And one win has eluded Thomas Jefferson in the first two weeks of a season for the first time in the 21-year golden career of head coach Bill Cherpek. Before we get to whether Thomas Jefferson will win the conference again, and whether West Mifflin has another top tailback, there is one main question with this conference: What the heck is the name of the conference? For the past three seasons, this has been the Big Nine Conference. Great idea, since there were nine teams. But this conference also has had eight teams. During those years, it was the Big Eight. There were years it had seven. Thus, the name Big Seven. But Yough was added this year to make a 10-team conference. So, what now? We here at MSA Sports change with the numbers. A rare battle of two teams in the MSA Sports Hometown Softball Program transpired Monday at William Penn Field. The West Mifflin Titans were seeking a much-needed win to put some distance between themselves and the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars in the race for a playoff spot in Class AAA. The Elizabeth-Forward Warriors already had a firm grip on 3rd place in Section 3 and were looking to win to lock up their own spot in the postseason. Keyed by a strong pitching performance and opportunistic offense, the host Elizabeth Forward Lady Warriors scored a 4-0 victory against McKeesport at William Penn Field on Saturday. Sophomore Lauren Mathews, in her first varsity start at pitcher, tossed a complete-game shutout, limiting the Lady Tigers to just six hits. Mathews, who struck out five, showed poise by holding McKeesport scoreless despite allowing a pair of baserunners in both the second and fifth innings. Offensively, Elizabeth Forward took an early lead by capitalizing on the control issues of Tigers’ hurler Sam Arthrell. Three Warriors walked in the opening frame, including Lauren Cain, who drew a free pass with the bases loaded to score Lexi Ribarchak.Scholastic Notebook – 03/06/2015

Chassidy Omogrosso is Blackhawk’s Energizer bunny. The senior guard on the Blackhawk girls basketball team seemingly never stops on the court. Her motor is stuck on overdrive. While Comcast has bundle deals for cable television, Blackhawk has a bundle full of energy in Omogrosso. Omogrosso’s “run” through the recent WPIAL tournament was one to behold. She was close to unstoppable in the Class AAA playoffs, leading the Cougars to a second consecutive WPIAL title last Saturday at Pitt’s Petersen Events Center. No one has records for what is the greatest playoff run – scoring wise – for WPIAL girls basketball. But Omogrosso has to be somewhere near the top.Scholastic Notebook – 01/09/2015

New Castle High School’s Malik Hooker apparently isn’t the only one who wears the athletic “genes” in the family. Hooker was one of the best two-sport athletes in the state the past two years, standing out in football and basketball. He now is a freshman football player at Ohio State, but is being redshirted this year. Two of Hooker’s younger brothers are now playing on the New Castle basketball. One of them is the team’s leading scorer in his first year as a starter. Marquel Hooker, a 5-foot-10 junior, is averaging 16.4 points a game. Welcome to another installment of “PIHL Notebook” as we wrap up our season preview four-pack with a look inside what used to be the Open Class. Instead, it will now be known as Varsity Division II, divided into Class B and Class C. It bears mentioning, as touched upon in our feature on the new alignment on October 6, only co-op teams are allowed in Division II. Class B is the cream of the crop, at least on paper. Defending Nailers Cup champion Harbor Creek headlines things, joined by four semifinalists from the 2014 Open Class Playoffs. Also in the mix is a Penn-Trafford squad down from Class AAA, a brand new “B Team” from Upper St. Clair, and a blast from the past in Meadville.
