Scholastic Notebook – 01/20/2017

It was six years ago that Kyle DeGregorio went through a painful experience of being let go as Baldwin’s boys basketball coach. But DeGregorio eventually found new coaching life a little farther south down Route 51, and has given the Belle Vernon program a new heartbeat. Belle Vernon is 10-3 and tied with McGuffey and South Fayette for first place in WPIAL Class 4A Section 3. Two of those tied teams square off Friday when Belle Vernon plays host to South Fayette.

Chicks Picks for Week Ten
November 3, 2016
Welcome to Week 10 of the high school football season. Chick’s Picks attended the annual Playoff Pairings meeting on Monday night.  After witnessing so much joy from the teams that punched their tickets to the postseason, Chick’s Picks couldn’t help but feel bad for those that missed out – especially those with only a few losses on the year. The situation reminded Chick’s Picks of a time when the MSA Sports crew got together for pick-up game of dodgeball.  The Boss and world-renowned broadcaster Sam Hall were the team captains.  Based on her athletic prowess, Chick’s Picks was sure that she would be drafted in the early rounds.

Big Game Hunting for Week Ten
As we embark on the ‘Highway to Heinz’ or the Road to RMU I feel like we should all wear helmet decals in the postseason to honor the Beaver Bobcats, who in one Friday night; go from the number one team in the state of Pennsylvania in 3 A, to not in the playoffs. We need to keep a “Captain’s pick” spot open like they do in golf for the Ryder Cup team. Now we make our way towards the championships on the MSA Sports Network, huge games every week, as always send your complaints about those not included in BGH to @JohnnyLee@msasports.net as he takes over the complaint department for all playoff moaning. So with that out of the way we can get set to go postseason Big Game Hunting.

Chicks Picks for Week Eight
October 20, 2016
Welcome to Week 8 of the high school football season. The Stretch Run is upon us.  It’s that magical time of year when postseason positions are secured, and the sheep are separated from the goats. Speaking of sheep and goats – each year during the Stretch Run, Chick’s Picks organizes a group fitness activity for the entire MSA Sports crew.  Chick’s Picks believes this team-building exercise plays a crucial role in getting the gang ready for the playoffs.  This year, Chick’s Picks selected Animal Flow as the group activity of choice – a new fitness craze which teaches animal movement training.

Scholastic Notebook – 09/30/2016
September 30, 2016
Fort Cherry is in a drive for five. If the Rangers complete the drive, it will be the first time in 18 years. The Fort Cherrry football team is 4-0. The Rangers have been somewhat of a surprise this year after going 2-7 and 3-6 the past two seasons. Fort Cherry is likely to go to 5-0 because the Rangers play Friday night against West Greene, which is 1-4. This is the fourth time in nine seasons that Fort Cherry has started the season 4-0. The others were in 2008, 2009 and 2013. But every year, Fort Cherry lost its fifth game to Clairton. The last time Fort Cherry started 5-0 was 1998. That year, the Rangers finished the regular season with a 9-0 record before losing in the first round of the playoffs to Clairton.

MSA Sports Saturdays Scholastic Starz for Week Two
September 11, 2016
Any coach will tell you, versatility in a football player is huge. If you can play various positions at a high level in all three aspects of the game, that is a very good thing. Especially in Class 1-A where rosters sizes are small and the demand for versatility is not only appreciated, but needed. Here are the top five stand out performances from a gusty Saturday afternoon in Week Two as the play of these guys 'blew away' their opponents. Kenny Robinson - Imani Christian

Chicks Picks for Week Two
September 8, 2016
Welcome to Week 2 of the high school football season. Chick’s Picks has been fortunate enough to make a lot of friends throughout her prognosticating career – some that are unforgettable, and others that she cares to forget.  One of Chick’s Picks’ favorites happens to be a very dear Twitter pal, who happens to be the better half of a local coach.  This Twitter pal in particular has stood by Chick’s Picks through good times and bad – weeks when the crystal ball was on fire, as well as weeks when early retirement was considered.  Earlier this season, during Week Zero, Chick’s Picks’ pal even came through with her own prediction when the crystal ball was in the shop for maintenance.

CTK ’16: 1-A Tri-County South Conference Preview
August 29, 2016
Frazier gave the much-maligned Tri-County South Conference some respect last season. The Commodores were undefeated until losing in the WPIAL semifinals to Clairton. A new year brings new classifications in the WPIAL and a slightly altered Tri-County South Conference. Frazier is gone. So is Beth-Center. So is Bentworth. All three of them are now in Class 2A under the state’s new six-class sytem. Six members of the Tri-County South last year stayed in the conference. Monessen and Fort Cherry are new this year. There doesn’t seem to be a prohibitive favorite to win the conference. Some expect Monessen to be the frontrunner, but the Greyhounds lost a Week 0 game to Charleroi last Friday. Carmichaels, Jefferson-Morgan and Avella have experienced teams returning.
