It’s a Zane-y world out there in WPIAL football so far this season. After the first three weeks of the season, Zane Dudek is atop the WPIAL in rushing yards – and also points scored. Dudek is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound junior running back at Armstrong High School. This is Armstrong’s first year of existence after Ford City and Kittanning merged to form Armstrong. Dudek is certainly bringing some attention to the Riverhawks. Dudek has rushed for 736 yards on 67 carries, an average of 10.9 yards a carry. No other WPIAL running back has 600 yards rushing. Dudek is tied for the scoring lead with Beth-Center’s Tony Welsh at 72 points.WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Three – 09/16/2015

Time is inexorable, I know that, but nonetheless I find myself wanting to slow things down once the WPIAL football season begins. For a lot of reasons, to give myself more time to prepare for my game, to be able to have a little extra time to enjoy what is for me the best time of the year, to slow the inevitable cold-weather from getting here and, to lengthen the deadline to get Big Game Hunting into the Boss. I don’t have to tell you how he can be when you get on his bad side. Time goes by fast, and the older you get the faster it goes. Week three is here and I am almost ready with my pre-season Big Game Hunting. Speaking of time, how long has it been since the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars started a season 0-2?
CTK 2015 – Class A Tri-County South 7 Conference Preview

The Tri-County South is more like the Try Beating Beth-Center Conference Beth-Center moved into the Tri-County South in 2008. Since then, the Bulldogs have won the conference title five times, including four in a row. Beth-Center has lost only one conference game in the past four years. So the question is will Beth-Center’s dominance continue? Probably. The Bulldogs look to be the team to beat again, one year after they outscored conference opponents, 397-47.Scholastic Notebook – 04/17/2015

Life in Section 1 of WPIAL Class AAAA baseball is full of close calls. The WPIAL season is a little less than a month old and it’s remarkable how many close games there are in Section 1. Heading into Friday’s action, there have been 12 games played in the section. Two-thirds were decided by two runs or less and five had been decided by one run. The close games certainly reflect the balance of the section. But they also reflect the strength of the section. This should tell you the strength of Section 1: It includes four teams – Moon, North Allegheny, Pine-Richland and Seneca Valley – that have made 17 WPIAL championship appearances in either Class AAAA or AAA over the past 11 years. The other members of the section are North Hills and Butler.

Four athletes who would later go on to professional careers, several multi-sport athletes, four coaches who won nearly 40 WPIAL championships between them, an old-school baseball player whose son continued his Major League Baseball legacy and a team that won nine WPIAL and PIAA playoff games en route to a state basketball title by an average margin of victory of 25.8. Those are some of the headliners of the WPIAL Hall of Fame class of 2015. The WPIAL held a news conference Thursday morning to announce its ninth annual class. Welcome to Week 10 of the high school football season. Chick’s Picks attended the wedding of a dear friend last weekend. The lavish affair featured dinner entertainment by a celebrity musician. Awestruck by his performance, Chick’s Picks was determined to find an opportunity in this intimate setting to personally applaud the star. As guests began to mingle after dinner, Chick’s Picks spotted the celebrity packing up his equipment and headed his way. Before she could get out a formal introduction, though, the celebrity interrupted, “Wow, is that really you Chick’s Picks? You’re my idol! Maybe you’ve heard the quote “Down goes Frazier, Down goes Frazier.” It is a line from legendary sports announcer Howard Cosell, describing boxer Joe Frazier after he went down from a George Foreman punch in a famous 1973 bout. In WPIAL football this year, it is “Up goes Frazier, Up goes Frazier.” Things haven’t been this good in Perryopolis (where Frazier is located) since 10 years after that Frazier-Foreman fight. The Frazier Commodores are 5-0 and have a showdown tonight with Beth-Center for first place in the Tri-County South Conference. The winner likely will win the Tri-County South title. Frazier has not started a season 5-0 since 1983, when the school made it all the way to the WPIAL Class A championship game before losing to Western Beaver.CTK ’14: WPIAL A Tri-County South Conference Preview

Respect. The Tri-County South Conference doesn’t have much of it from the rest of WPIAL Class A, and the only way to earn it is to “show up” in the postseason. The much-maligned Tri-County South is 0-12 in playoff games the past three years. Since the 2007 season, the only Tri-County South teams to win a playoff game are Monessen and Beth-Center. But Monessen is no longer in the conference. The last Tri-County South team to win a playoff game other than Beth-Center or Monessen was Jefferson-Morgan in 2006. Will things change this year? Well, Beth-Center looks to be the cream of the crop again, but some other teams have some experienced players. Moon’s running game went from Colaianni to Cole, and now everything is cool with the Tigers on the ground.Moon is in the WPIAL football playoffs this season for the first time since 2006, and one of the main reasons for the turnaround is Cole Blake, a senior running back who is the fifth-leading rusher in the WPIAL heading into the playoffs.Blake has made a name for himself, rushing for 1,457 yards. He set a school record with 342 yards in one game. But Blake’s story is interesting in that he only got a chance to be the featured back this year because of an injury. Suffice to say, Blake has run with that chance.
