Welcome to Week 11 of the high school football season. Chick’s Picks is an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Dad video series, always looking forward to new episodes every Tuesday. Needless to say, she was pleasantly surprised this Tuesday, when she saw her own name mentioned in the caption. Chick’s Picks clicked play without further delay. Pittsburgh Dad started off the episode in his finest Pittsburghese, “Yinz heard about that lady that says she can predict WPIAL football games? Well, I can do that, too. And so we are off on the Highway to Heinz, some great games in the first round as always but things will really pick up here in the quarters. The first round was fairly “chalk” with A being the only classification to lose more than one higher seeded team, yes Beth Center and Frazier were both from the TCS. AA lost only an eight seed as South Park blocked Beaver’s attempt at a game-winning field goal as time expired. AAA saw only their seven seed, Montour go out falling hard to Mars. AAAA had just one upset but it was by far the biggest “eyebrow raiser” of the night as the Plum Mustangs ousted the four, Penn Hills. Who will surprise us in the quarters? Has there ever been a WPIAL football regular season that was so perfect as this one? Probably not. Fourteen teams go into the final night of the regular season with undefeated records. Two of them play (West Allegheny at Central Valley). That means there could be 13 teams that finish the regular season with perfect records. That would be the most in the WPIAL in a long time. Possibly ever. Checking records going back 37 years, there has never been a WPIAL season with 13 undefeated and untied teams (there used to no overtime in WPIAL football).Chicks Picks – Week Nine – 2014

Welcome to Week 9 of the high school football season. Every so often, Chick’s Picks has a run in with an internet heckler, one who enjoys stirring up some healthy banter over predictions that are not necessarily agreed upon. This occurred last week on Twitter, regarding one particular big-game pick. The loyal reader’s taunting began shortly after Chick’s Picks was posted on Thursday, calling out the prognosticator for what was deemed a terrible prediction. Chick’s Picks monitored the situation closely throughout the day, noticing that the same reader also called out other local prognosticators for the same prediction.Chicks Picks – Week Six – 2014

Welcome to Week 6 of the high school football season. We have reached the mid-way point in the season—a critical point where some teams make it or break it, step on the gas, or are comfortable setting the cruise control for the remainder of the season. Chick’s Picks spent some time reflecting on her own first half performance, along with other recent halves of distinction—most notably the Steelers regular season opener against the Browns. The Steelers built a seemingly solid 27-3 lead over the Browns going into halftime. Battling back, though, the Browns tied the game late in the fourth quarter before the Steelers eventually closed the door with a game-winning field goal.WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Six 2014

The tension is starting to mount here in the 2014 WPIAL football season. On the field, in the standings and, yes sometimes in the plush MSA Sports World Headquarters as some of the MSA gang have occasionally wandered too close to Mike Azadian’s “Friday Night Eats”. Mitch tends to respond to people taking his pizza the way the 2014 Clairton Bears have responded to not picking up their sixth straight WPIAL championship in 2013, angrily and emphatically. For the second and final time this season, a WPIAL Class Quad-A game slipped into the Saturday schedule as the annual homecoming game at Shaler joined a list of three of the 'regulars' hosting Saturday afternoon high school football. While overcast skies replaced brilliant sunshine in the second half of these four contests, these players continued to shine bright al afternoon long. In the new-look Eastern Conference, four teams return while there are five news kids on the block. But with the pedigree of most of the newcomers, you can see why they are considered the Fearsome Foursome. Here is the resume for the five new entrants into the Eastern Conference. Ten WPIAL football championships in the last eight years, two perennial powers in Class AA moving down to Class A and a team that set a district and state record 66-game winning streak along with the team that eventually broke that historic run. This could mean a tough 2014 campaign for Eastern traditionalists Leechburg, Riverview, Springdale and Wilkinsburg who finished a combined 8-28 a year ago and were all home listening to the postseason on MSA Sports.
2014 MSA Sports Boys Basketball All-Netters

Two teams that won WPIAL championships this season each have two players on the MSA Sports All-Netters boys basketball all-star team. New Castle won the WPIAL Class AAAA championship and Lincoln Park the Class A title. They each have a duo on the team, which is picked by the MSA Sports Staff. The All-Netters squad (first- and second-teams) are made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position. The teams also includes three juniors and one sophomore. The son is shining all over area basketball this season. It is quite common to see a coach’s son do well in WPIAL basketball. But it just seems there are more than usual father-son combos doing well this year. Four sons whose father is the head coach are averaging between 17 and 22 points a game for teams that all have at least clinched a WPIAL playoff berth, or are in good shape to make it to the postseason. * Julian Batts, a junior guard at Jeannette, averages 22 a game for the Jayhawks. His father is Adrian Batts. Jeannette is tied for second place in Class AA Section 3. * Matty McConnell averages 19 a game for Chartiers Valley, which has clinched at least a tie for the Class AA Section 5 title. His father is Tim McConnell.
