2016-2017 MSA Sports Male Athletes of the Year

Darius Wise and Austin Butler were both 'Cats in high school, Wise playing for the Beaver Bobcats and Butler for the Latrobe Wildcats. But when it comes to athletes, Wise and Butler are top dogs. Wise and Butler, who both graduated last month, have been selected the MSA Sports Co-Athletes of the Year. The MSA Sports staff selects the athlete of the year from all WPIAL schools. In the days of high school athletes specializing in one sport, Wise and Butler were throwbacks. They were multi-sports athletes - in the same three sports. But it's not just competing in three sports that made them stand out, it's what they achieved in the three sports that made them two of a kind.2017 Diamond Studs Baseball All-Stars

Latrobe was the only team from the WPIAL to win a state championship in baseball this season - and Latrobe is the only team with two players on this year's MSA Diamond Studs all-star team. The Diamond Studs consists of the top 12 players in the entire WPIAL, regardless of position. It is picked by the MSA staff. The team has some players who made big impacts as two-way players - pitchers/position players. The team also includes five players who have committed to Division I colleges, including two who chose Virginia Tech. Seton Hill, a Division II school, has two recruits on the Diamond Studs team. It truly was a golden season for Latrobe as the Wildcats followed up their first ever WPIAL baseball championship with PIAA state gold. 2017 turned out to be a season of silver for South Park as the Eagles made it to the finals in both the district and state postseason, but fell in the two title games and impressively claimed second place in both. Latrobe Greater Than Whitehall to Win PIAA 5-A Gold

After a playoff run that featured multiple come-from-behind victories, Greater Latrobe left no doubt in the state title game. The Wildcats cruised to a 7-0 rain-shortened win against District 11 champion Whitehall to claim the first PIAA 5A Championship at Penn State's Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The game was called after more than an hour delay in the top of the sixth, and with no end in sight for the steady downpour. The rain did not dampen the celebration, though, as the Wildcats savored their first state title, just weeks after securing the team's first WPIAL crown.Scholastic Notebook – 06/09/2017

The Hempfield softball team is undefeated this season and has won 39 games in a row over the last two years. But maybe the most impressive streak of this team has to do with nothing. As in nothing allowed in the state playoffs. Hempfield has not given up a run in two years of PIAA postseason play. The Spartans won a PIAA championship a year ago and did not allow a run in four games. In two state games this year, Hempfield has defeated Central York, 1-0, and McDowell, 5-0, in eight innings. Hempfield plays Chambersburg in the PIAA Class 6A semifinals Monday. The No. 1 objective, obviously, is to win. Chambersburg's objective will be to somehow crack Hempfield's scoreless streak.Scholastic Notebook – 06/02/2017

It doesn't matter whether it's McKenna or Madison. These Lampes have lit up opposing pitchers. McKenna and Madison Lampe are twin sisters and sophomores on the West Greene softball team. You might have a hard time coming up with any WPIAL softball sisters over the years that have made such a big impact on offense at the same time. The Lampes helped West Greene win a second consecutive WPIAL softball title on Thursday. The school had never won a championship in another sport. Mckenna Lampe was 2 for 3 in the title game and is now batting a whopping .662. A center fielder, McKenna's most amazing statistic might be the 44 bases she has stolen this season. Meanwhile, Madison Lampe, a sophomore third baseman, is batting .597. She has stolen 21 bases.2017 WPIAL BASEBALL PLAYOFFS Results
There was one repeat district baseball champion in Riverside, three programs that have won gold before in the last decade in Pine-Richland, Blackhawk and California, and two newbee winners as Latrobe and Jeannette are enjoying their very first baseball crowns. Latrobe Wins First WPIAL Baseball Title With Win Over Mars

The last time the Latrobe Wildcats played in a WPIAL Championship baseball game, things were much different than they are now, in 2017. On May 30, 1985, Latrobe lost to Bethel Park in the Class AAA title game. Gas was $1.20 per gallon, Ronald Reagan was the President and there were only two classifications in the WPIAL. On May 31, 2017, Latrobe won its first ever baseball crown by defeating another team looking for its first championship, in its first championship appearance, Mars, by a final of 6-2. Coming into the game, both coaches, Matt Basciano of Latrobe and Andy Bednar of Mars, emphasized the importance of their team getting and holding an early lead.
Hempfield Cruises Past Latrobe for 3rd Straight WPIAL Title
They say in sports, one of the hardest things to do is defeat the same team three times in a season. Things seemed to be heading that route for the top-seeded Hempfield Spartans against their sixth-seeded section rival Latrobe Wildcats, but the Spartans settled in and claimed its third consecutive WPIAL softball championship winning by a final score of 13-2, becoming just the sixth school to win three consecutive WPIAL Softball Championships. Latrobe opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning and scored without a hit. Designated player Meredith Carr opened the frame with a lead-off walk and was sacrificed to second. On a pitch in the dirt, Carr moved to third and while sliding in, a wide throw by Spartan catcher Madison Stoner allowed Carr to score making it 1-0.Hometown Softball Recap – Latrobe Wildcats – 04/25/2017

Greater Latrobe finally got back to what they know best. Winning. After a four game slide that dropped the Wildcats to under .500 overall and already two section loses, Greater Latrobe rebounded for a 12-2 victory over Penn Hills on Tuesday in Class 6A Section 2 matchup Graham Sabota Field in Latrobe. Greater Latrobe (5-5, 4-2 in section) had lost consecutive games to Hempfield, North Allegheny, Yough and Norwin, with the most recent loss coming this past Monday and found themselves on a losing streak heading into the game against Penn Hills.
