Waynesburg’s Baumgarner and Winchester Boys Win PIAA X-Country Gold

One individual and one team ran to cross-country state gold Saturday afternoon in Hershey. Winchester Thurston won the PIAA Class 1-A boys championship while Ben Baumgarner of Waynesburg won the PIAA Class 2-A individual boys championship race. Here are the results of the district runners that finished in the Top 25 of each boys and girls race along with the top five overall team finish form the 2016 PIAA Cross-Country Championships. PIAA BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS CLASS 3A Team — 1. Council Rock North, 76; 2. Carlisle, 118; 3. Downingtown West, 158; 4. Seneca Valley, 202; 5. LaSalle College, 204.
CTK ’16: 3-A Interstate Conference Preview

You could say the road to the top of the Interstate has gone through Washington in recent years. Washington won the Class 2A Interstate Conference three of the past four years. But a journey through the Interstate this year will not include a stop at Washington. Under the new classification system, Washington is longer in the Interstate. The Little Prexies are a Class 2A team. The departure of Washington isn’t the only change in the Interstate. Charleroi, Burgettstown and Brownsville also have dropped to Class 2A. Meanwhile, the Interstate adds Elizabeth Forward and Yough, which played in 3A last season. Also, South Park moves over from the old 2A Century Conference. A current NBA player, a former Parade All-American girls basketball player, two dominant teams and four highly successful coaches highlight the WPIAL Hall of Fame class of 2016. This is the 10th class for the WPIAL Hall of Fame, and selections were announced Wednesday at a news conference at the Heinz History Center. Inductees will be honored at a banquet at the Green Tree Doubletree June 10. A Hall of Fame committee selects inductees in five categories: athlete, coach, team, contest official and contributor. The WPIAL also inducts a Heritage Award winner and a Courage Award winner. Here is the 2016 class: ATHLETES
WPIAL Alum Q&A – Heather Davis

Playing four sports in high school is a tremendous accomplishment, while playing two sports at the college level is equally, if not even more impressive. Heather Davis achieved both of these feats during her time at Ford City High School and Waynesburg University. While at the now defunct Ford City, Davis starred in basketball, as well as golf, volleyball and track. On the hardwood, she was a four-year letterwinner, and earned all-section distinction as a senior in 2011-12. That season, she helped guide the Sabers to a 16-7 mark, including a playoff bid in Class AA. Additionally, she was named the MVP of the Cager Classic All-Star Game.Scholastic Notebook – 01/22/2016

There seems to be some question as to how good the top teams really are in WPIAL Class AA Section 4 basketball. Brownsville is 13-4, Charleroi 12-3 and Waynesburg 7-7. History makes you wonder about the strength of the teams. Among the three, there are a total of three WPIAL titles and only one in the past 50-plus years. Brownsville won a championship in 2001 while Charleroi won titles in 1940 and 1958. On top of that, no one from the section has done much in the playoffs in recent history. But while many may question the strength of the teams in the section, there is no question that Section 4 is where the scorers reside.

Repeat is not a word uttered often in the Interstate Conference. It has been a decade since a team has won the conference title outright (without ties) for two consecutive season. Washington could very easily buck the trend this year. It seems just about everybody is pegging Washington to repeat as conference champion. But can Washington or any other team from the Interstate go on to win a WPIAL title? That doesn’t happen often, either. Of the teams currently in the conference, there have been only four WPIAL champs the past quarter century. While the high school football playoffs are Primetime, that would make the three-week Stretch Run that wraps up the regular season the...Twilight? Whatever you want to call it, there seems each game has more on the line, thus to get to the big stage, you have to come up big in the 'dress rehearsals'. The final third of the regular season gets underway Friday night here on the MSA Sports Network. Several teams have already clinched playoff spots and the stretch-run will be a lot about positioning yourself for a good seed and a playoff push towards Heinz Field. We hit the midway point of the 2014 WPIAL football regular season with points a plenty. Offenses around the district continue to amass record setting numbers with good solid defenses creeping closer to the endangered species list. Friday night saw 12 teams score over 50 points and five of those teams eclipsed the 60 point plateau. And that doesn't even include the traditional 70+ point total for Clairton. At the rate he is passing, Pine-Richland quarterback Ben DiNucci has a good chance to become the 17th player in WPIAL history to throw for 5,000 career yards. While that is an impressive feat, Pine-Richland does thro the ball often. So DiNucci will naturally pile up yardage. What might be more impressive about DiNucci is his accuracy. DiNucci is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior who you probably wouldn’t want to play in darts. Sure, in Pine-Richland’s spread offense, DiNucci throws a number of short passes. But he still throws downfield and his accuracy is uncanny.
