A rainy Monday is expected to give way to a sunny Tuesday when the district continues its 2018 girls team tennis playoffs.
The WPIAL postponed all eight quarterfinal matches Monday and re-scheduled for the same higher seed home sites on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
The second round matches in Class AAA are:
No. 9 Mars at No. 1 Mt. Lebanon
No. 5 Upper St. Clair at No. 4 North Allegheny
No. 6 Peters Township at No. 3 Moon
No. 7 Latrobe at No. 2 Shady Side Academy
The Class AA quarterfinals are:
No. 9 Ellis School at No. 1 Sewickley Academy
No. 5 Derry at No. 4 Greensburg Salem
No. 6 Greensburg Central Catholic at No. 3 Beaver
No. 7 Quaker Valley vs No. 2 Knoch at Butler
The winners advance to the semifinals on Wednesday.
Key soccer finales
Tuesday is scheduled to be the final night of section play in soccer, and there are three boys matches with playoff implications.
Two of them are in Section 3-AAA as Laurel Highlands visits Greensburg Salem and Belle Vernon hosts Trinity.
Laurel Highlands and Belle Vernon have already clinched playoff spots while Greensburg Salem and Trinity are tied for the fourth playoff berth.
If both the Golden Lions and Hillers win, they will each qualify for the playoffs since they split their head-to-head tiebreaker.
Thus, if they both tie or both lose, they will also qualify for the district playoffs.
The other key boys soccer match is Mt. Pleasant at Burrell.
If the Buccaneers upset the Vikings, Burrell will end up tied with Freeport for fourth place and both teams will qualify after splitting their head-to-head matches earlier.
‘A’ big matches
The final week of the regular season begins in WPIAL girls volleyball on Tuesday, and there are plenty of big matches in Class A where 12 of at least 16 teams have clinched playoff berths.
In Section 1-A, Western Beaver closes out its section schedule at Shenango. The Golden Beavers need a win and two Union losses to quality of the playoffs. The Scotties are at Rochester Tuesday.
Two playoffs spots are still up for grabs in Section 2-A where one game separates Avella (7-5), Jefferson-Morgan (7-5) and Mapletown (6-6). The Eagles visit the Rockets, where the winner will clinch. The Maples host Bentworth.
Burgettstown has clinched in Section 3-A as it visits Northgate. The Flames need to beat the Blue Devils then win again and have Burgettstown lose on Thursday.
Four teams are fighting for at least two playoff spots in Section 4-A, and three matches Tuesday factor in the chase. St. Joseph (0-12) visits Vincentian Academy (6-6), Eden Christian (5-7) is at Springdale (3-9) and Trinity Christian (7-5) hosts Riverview (6-6).
