Through the years: Yough outslugged Kittanning in 2013 playoff barnburner

Each week throughout the high school football season, the Valley News Dispatch will take a look back at the games, players and events that have shaped local scholastic history.

In a spectacular offensive display, Yough outgained Kittanning, 529-494, as the Cougars won their only playoff game to date 57-42 on Nov. 1, 2013. Yough quarterback Tyler Donohue accounted for five Yough touchdowns, and Zane Dudek scored three Wildcats TDs.

100 years ago

• Dreams of a second consecutive undefeated season for Parnassus were dashed with a 12-0 loss at Scottdale on what was then known as Armistice Day, Nov. 11.

75 years ago

• Tarentum was eliminated from WPIAL title consideration because of a 6-6 tie against Homestead. It also ended a 17-game Redcats winning streak. Floyd (Dixon) Anthony scored the Tarentum touchdown on a 25-yard run.

• Oakmont halfback Donald Coplay’s 57-yard touchdown run was enough for the Oaks in a 6-0 victory over Springdale.

60 years ago

• Arnold blanked Hampton, 31-0, behind two rushing touchdowns by Lions fullback John Henry Favors.

• Leechburg finished its season at 8-2 with a 21-0 victory over Kittanning. Dennis Yajko ran for three Blue Devils TDs.

50 years ago

• Valley ended its most successful season to date with a 41-20 romp over Hempfield. Kevin Thrower ran for 202 yards and four touchdowns to lead the 7-2 Vikings.

Mark Pupilli ran for three TDs to lift Plum to a 21-6 win over Yough.

40 years ago

• Under brutally cold conditions at the foot of Chesnut Ridge, Knoch’s A.J. Pagano kicked a field goal in overtime through falling snow as the Knights recorded a 9-6 playoff victory at Derry.

• Riverview shocked 10-0 Cornell with a 12-0 shutout in Coraopolis. Carl Daube and Rich Rossi ran for the Raiders touchdowns in the snow and mud.

25 years ago

• An 81-yard punt return by Andre Burke was the spark Valley needed as the Vikings erased a 16-0 deficit and went on to defeat Montour, 26-16, to open the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs.

• Burrell’s defense held Mt. Pleasant to 19 net offensive yards as the Bucs prevailed 10-0 in a first-round playoff game. A 17-yard run by Dane Park and a 22-yard field goal by Matt Beacom was all Burrell needed.

10 years ago

• Highlands receiver Jordan Lineberg tallied on a 42-yard pass from Blake Leri with 9 minutes, 9 seconds remaining to lift the Golden Rams to a 24-19 first-round playoff victory over New Castle.

Five years ago

• Connor Sellinger scored two Freeport touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as Aliquippa handed the Yellowjackets a 40-17 opening-round playoff defeat.
