Trib HSSN boys basketball team of the week: Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions
Record: 4-0 in Section 3-2A, 11-2 overall
Last year: Greensburg Central Catholic was section champion with a record of 11-1, two games in front of Serra Catholic. The Centurions finished 18-7 overall, losing in the WPIAL semifinals to eventual champion Aliquippa, 61-36, then falling to Otto-Eldred in the PIAA first round, 67-54.
#Earned: The Centurions concluded 2023 by seeing their eight-game winning streak end in the Greensburg Salem holiday tournament with a loss to Penn Hills. However, GCC rang in the new year with a new streak thanks to section wins over Leechburg by 51 points Wednesday and winning at rival Jeannette two nights later by 27 points.
Scoring stars: A pair of seniors led the way for Greensburg Central Catholic in both victories last week. Leading scorer Tyree Turner scored 19 points against Leechburg and followed up with a 25-point effort against Jeannette. Forward Franco Alvarez scored a dozen points in each of the two wins over the Blue Devils and Jayhawks. Against Leechburg, junior guard Sean Walker scored 10 points while junior guards Liam Gallagher scored 12 points and Brady O’Rourke added 10 points at Jeannette.
