Three of the 12 districts that make up the PIAA earned gold in the 2024 boys basketball playoffs with the WPIAL standing alone atop the highest step of the medal stand.
For the first time in 20 years and only the fourth time in the 124-year history of the boys hoops state playoffs, District 7 teams captured gold in half of the six classifications.
It was a repeat performance for Lincoln Park in 4A and Imani Christian Academy in A, and after finishing second in the PIAA a year ago, Aliquippa swept 2A district and state titles in the same school year the football team accomplished the same rare feat.
While the Leopards and Saints won back-to-back PIAA championships, it was a three-peat for District 12 5A power Imhotep Charter.
The Panthers were joined in the victory circle by 3A winner Devon Prep, a team that had an overall record under .500 when the state playoffs began.
The final champion crowned was the No. 5 seed from District 3, but Central York rebounded from a disappointing district postseason to win five PIAA playoff games and take home the 6A title.
In all, five of the six teams at No. 1 a week ago in the Trib HSSN boys basketball rankings finished on top again in this week’s final poll after winning a PIAA crown.
