Trib HSSN rewind: A look back at the 2018-19 indoor track season

It was a bit of rough ride for WPIAL athletes competing at the Pennsylvania Indoor Track Championships at Penn State on Feb. 24.

Only two athletes — Hempfield senior Mackenna Orie in the shot put and North Allegheny senior Zach Kinne in the 3,000-meter run — returned to Western Pennsylvania with state titles.

Kinne’s teammate, junior Daniel McGoey, placed second in the 3,000 meters.

Others to earn silver medals were Mt. Lebanon junior Patrick Anderson in the mile, Hempfield senior Jared Bannon in the 60-meter hurdles and Bethel Park sophomore Emily Carter in the 3,000. Carter also placed fourth in the mile.

Picking up third-place medals were Seneca Valley senior Seth Ketler in the 800, Mars junior Zach Leachman in the 3,000, Baldwin senior Brendan O’Malley in the long jump, Brownsville junior Gionna Quarzo in the 3,000, South Park senior Maura Huwalt in the shot put and Mt. Lebanon senior Flynn Begor in the 60-meter hurdles.

Former Southmoreland thrower, Somerset senior Nick Hyde, placed second in the shot put.

Tri-State champions

Before the WPIAL athletes competed at the state meet, they went head to head at Edinboro on Feb. 16 at the Tri-State indoor championships.

O’Malley had a big day by winning the 200- and 400-meter runs and placing second in the long jump.

Carter, Fox Chapel’s Kate Carnavele and Oakland Catholic senior Jayla Ellis each won two events. Carter won the mile and the 3,000, Carnavele captured the 200 and 60 dash and Ellis won the long jump and 60-meter hurdles.

Boys’ winners at Edinboro were Kamden Martin, Canon-McMillan (60); Kendall Branan, Indiana (800); Anderson, Mt. Lebanon (mile); McGoey (3,000); Chris Colligan, Penn-Trafford (high jump); and Jack Codispot, Butler (pole vault).

Girls’ winners were Jane Madsen, Upper St. Clair (400); Malia Anderson, Greensburg Salem (800); Jenna Uncapher, Hempfield (high jump); Maddy Murphy, Bishop Carroll (triple jump); Taylor Shriver, Waynesburg (pole vault); and Orie, Hempfield (shot put).

All-state honors

Several WPIAL athletes were honored for their performances, earning all-state honors. Orie and Kinne were first-team selections.
