Team of the Week: Thomas Jefferson

A week that began with the Jaguars securing their subsection title ended with them topping the 37-team field at the 18th annual Allegheny County Tournament to win their first county title.

In addition to the team title, which TJ won 170.5-168 over North Allegheny, the Jaguars finished with three individual champions at the county meet: 126-pounder Michael Zacur, 152-pounder Alex Weber and 195-pounder Max Shaw. Five other TJ wrestlers earned medals for top-eight placement.

This week, TJ will begin the team postseason by hosting the Section 2-AAA tournament; the Jaguars will face Peters Township in the semifinals, with Mt. Lebanon and Connellsville squaring off in the other semifinal.

Other nominees:

Keystone Oaks: The Golden Eagles made it into the playoffs as a fifth-place team last season, but they’ll sail into it this year after claiming a subsection title. They’ll look to knock off host Freedom to win the Section 2-AA tournament on Wednesday.

Mt. Lebanon: The Blue Devils came out of the Allegheny County Tournament with two individual champions (Mac Stout and Luke Stout) and six medalists. It was Luke Stout’s third county title in three tries. Mt. Lebanon also won a subsection title after a third-place finish last year and will wrestle for the Section 2-AAA tournament title on Wednesday.

North Allegheny: The Tigers dethroned Hampton atop Section 3-AAA, subsection B, thanks to a 39-31 win in the team’s match on the final night of the section competition. Dylan Coy finished off the match with a pin. The Tigers also finished second at the Allegheny County Tournament, with Jon Hoover winning the 170-pound title and eight wrestlers getting medals.
