Upper St. Clair will build a new aquatics center at the high school that includes an eight-lane pool and a separate special-use pool suitable for diving.
The aquatics center was part of a $22.65 million project approved at Monday’s school board meeting that also includes stadium renovations and new district offices that will overlook the home bleachers. Construction is scheduled to start within weeks and finish in August 2019.
“We will be replacing an aging swimming pool with a new, larger facility that will have greater access and healthier air quality for our students,” USC superintendent Patrick O’Toole said in a statement. “Sports, like swimming, are growing in popularity across the country and we have experienced similar growth at USC.”
The district plans to build a multi-use complex beside the football stadium to house the district’s central offices and a pressbox. The district currently leases office space in the municipal building.
“Our central offices are not adequately sized and not designed to maximize work productivity,” O’Toole said. “To renovate them at the present site, which we do not own, would still leave us as renters and still with inadequate space.”
The stadium improvements will target the bleachers, restrooms and concessions area. The artificial turf and track will not be replaced.
Additionally, the district will further develop around a turf field built in 2006 at Boyce Middle School by adding a single structure to provide restrooms, a concessions area and announcing booth.
