Upsets shake up 2A bracket in WPIAL doubles tournament

The seeds held for the most part in the Class 3A bracket while the Class 2A tournament was wildly unpredictable at the WPIAL boys tennis championships Tuesday.

In Class 2A, the fourth seed will meet the sixth seed for the WPIAL title.

No. 4 John Rohrkaste and Jonah Camardese of Montour knocked off top-seeded Max Kopf and Ben Terrell of Sewickley Academy in the semifinals, 7-6 (0), 6-3

No. 6 Jackson Quigley and Tejas Mitra of Sewickley Academy, both seniors, topped seventh-seeded Grant Webb and Matteo Castellini of Quaker Valley in a three-set semifinal, 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4.

No. 14 Will Watson and Brahm Gianiodis of Quaker Valley pulled the biggest first-round upset, defeating No. 3 Steven Duing and Brody Wojcik of South Park, 10-4.

In Class 3A, No. 1 Zidaan Hassan and Logan Memije of Gateway and No. 2 Ronan Gibbons and Ari Plutko of Upper St. Clair will meet in the finals.

Hassan and Memije defeated fifth-seeded Dhruv Kulkarni and Colin Stalnaker of Franklin Regional in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-2.

Gibbons and Pluko beat No. 3 Travis Malone and Ben Hallman of Fox Chapel, 7-5, 6-3.

No. 13 Avi and Kritin Sharma of Peters Township pulled off the biggest upset, toppling No. 4 Srivatsav Thirumala and Shivum Telang of North Allegheny in the first round.

The finals and consolation finals are set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at North Allegheny.

In Class 3A, the top two teams advance to states. In Class 2A, the top four teams move on.
