Sheyann Watson has turned in good performances at the WPIAL individual rifle championships every time she has represented West Greene at the event in her high school career.

She finished in the top 40 in each of her first three seasons, taking fourth last year, 39th as a sophomore and 25th as a freshman.

On Thursday, Watson was better than pretty good. She was perfect.

Watson won West Greene’s first WPIAL rifle championship with a perfect score of 200-20x.

She finished ahead of four shooters — Andrew Arbanas of Butler, Alexia McCabe of Hempfield, Jarrett Hatfield of Trinity and Angelina Cecchini of Trinity — who finished with scores of 200-19x.

While Watson was the first West Greene shooter to win a WPIAL title, she continued a tradition of domination by Washington and Greene County athletes in the event. Shooters from Trinity (nine), Avella (five), McGuffey (four) and Waynesburg (20) have won 20 individual titles since the inaugural event in 1998. Waynesburg’s Selena Phillips won the past two seasons.

The top 17 finishers advance to the state tournament.

That includes Norwin’s Alanna Neidigh, Penn-Trafford’s Lexie Ferruolo and Hempfield’s Rylee Loucks, who shot 200-18x.

McGuffey’s Dwight Logsdon, West Greene’s Kenneth Jones and Ruby Ritenhouse, Hempfield’s Lydia Dunn, Avella’s Alayna Walther and Bethel Park’s Eric Halligan shot 200-17x.

Washington’s Oliver Kilgore and Kayla Andreoli and Butler’s Alec Stamm made states with a 200-16x score.
